Star Trek has seen many, many high quality 'fan films' in recent years; From 'Of Gods and Men' to 'Star Trek: Phase II' to 'Star Trek: Renegades', as well as many other smaller productions, the franchise has inspired several former actors from the official TV series to produce their own stories within the setting. While the abovementioned production names are of fairly good quality and clearly a labor of love for the teams making them, the trend has largely been for many of these 'fan films' to be low-budget productions with only limited studio support.

Star Trek: Axanar is set to blow this trend out of the water. With full special effects support from veteran Scifi company 'The Light Works', makeup and costume provided by Academy Award winner Kevin Haney and 'Make Up Effects Lab', and an industry veteran director (Robert Burnett) Axanar is geared up to be one of the biggest and best-produced pieces of Trek content fans will have gotten in a long time.

Many of the cast members will be familiar to long time Star Trek fans, with at least a couple faces from the also popular science fiction franchise 'Battlestar Galactica' present as well. In no specific order, the starring cast listed on their Kickstarter page is:

RICHARD HATCH AS-----------TONY TODD AS-----------------------KATE VERNON AS---------------GARY GRAHAM AS-------------JG HERZLER AS
COMMANDER------------------------ADMIRAL---------------------------CAPTAIN-----------------------------AMBASSADOR---------------------CAPTAIN
KHARN---------------------------------RAMIREZ----------------------------SONYA ALEXANDER-------------SOVAL--------------------------------SAMUEL TRAVIS

The plan is for the Kickstarter to raise at least $275,000 USD. This would give the production team a budget of $125,000 USD, allowing them to purchase a 16,000 square foot warehouse in California to house the offices and sound stage, as well as an additional $100,000 USD for set construction. Other costs include $50,000 USD for pre-production costs (make up/ pre-visualization modeling/costumes) and a whopping $350,000 USD for the final production costs.

A link to the Kickstarter, as well as the 20 minute 'Prelude to Axanar' video, can be found here. Donations will close eleven days from now. I know that I, for one, am very excited over this project. I hope that others in the fleet will consider donating as well!

This is fantastic! I have been a follower of Axanar for sometime now - backed both the Prelude and the full - I cannot wait! Cheers for the good read!

Out of all the "fan made" or "independent" Star Trek films, this is by far the best - and most in keeping with the Prime Universe!

I also backed Prelude and Axanar itself. I was blown away when they had sample ship video for the Prelude kickstarter and when I saw the quality of production I instantly backed Axanar feature as soon as it went live.

Honestly with JJ trek now prevalent, and on it's own merit - entertaining, it pales to the long history the franchise has established which JJ's world seemed to have thrown out the window. So we are left with this avenue - the fan made films, to enjoy the Prime universe and I have a feeling that Axanar is just the start of many more like it.

If you haven't checked them out yet, I strongly encourage it! Thank you Remissus for the write up on this, I really enjoyed the article and thank you Torinth for editing! Big Grin

Perhaps someone could approach the Axanar staff for an interview down the road?

I'm surprised at the talent they've got lined up and the quality of the visual effects.

For those that haven't seen it yet, the people behind Axanar release their Prelude to Axanar as a 1080p youtube video just recently. Check it out -HERE-

That is the best Star Trek I have seen in over 10 years. We should have been given this instead of the J.J. Universe.

BREAKING UPDATE TO THIS ARTICLE:

As of this weekend, Garrett Wang has joined the Axanar cast. Most popularly known for his role as 'Harry Kim' in Star Trek Voyager, he will be playing the Klingon commander of the very first D7 class ship to enter the war. I for one am really excited to see Garrett joining in; Harry Kim was always one of my favorite Voyager characters, due in no small part to Mr Wang's acting.

I actually saw this just the other day and thought it was terrific. The production values were top notch, hope to see more of this!

With the dismal performance of Nemesis and Enterprise, as well as the phenomenal success of JJ's, I had kind of sadly written off all hope for the prime universe, and sort of assumed I'd be having to tell my kid about Trek as a 'back in my day...' kind of thing.

This gives me hope.

Fandom, talent, and a low budget, has brought a great deal of creativity to this piece.

Plus, it has Micheal Hogan, as in Colonel Tigh, in there, which is a selling point by itself!

Just watched the Prelude, its been a long time since Trek has given me goosebumps. Looks like i'm going to need a few cold showers to recover from such awesomeness.

I watched Prelude last night and I have to agree. It far exceeded my greatest expectations for an independent project.

Absolutely, before watching Prelude last night, I was expecting the usual fan film quality stuff, but that was amazing.

The pledges have really rocketed over the last two days. 3 separate individuals have each pledged $10,000. I wonder if this kickstarter campaign will reach half a million?

That's absolutely incredible! Hopefully, CBS and Netflix are taking notes.. Smile

It is quite incredible how many have pledge and how much as well. I'm glad I am supporting this project. This project is what makes me believe the future of Star Trek is indeed in the hands of the fans.

It looks very interesting I wonder how they going to fit the history of the Federation.

Just watched, and I have to say, that was one the BEST fan made Star Trek video I've ever seen. It left me speechless, and I certainly hope they continue it. I only wish I could donate.

Beautifully made, cool project. I'm gonna have to keep my eye on this one!

I love the documentary feel to it. I wonder if that was just for the prelude and that they will make it play out as they normally would in star trek episodes for the rest of this series or if it will continue to be a documentary style. Either way it will be awesome but I'm just curious

From what I understand that was just Prelude. Axanar, I believe will follow a feature length film format.

That was more or less a proof of concept to demonstrate to people they have the talent to make something bigger. As far as I am aware the full length film that the recent kickstarter has mostly funded will be a traditional style movie.
