William Shatner has confirmed reports that he has been approached about appearing in the next Star Trek movie.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]

Last week, rumors began to rise about the cast of the next Star Trek film. Badass Digest published a report that there was a scene in Star Trek 3’s script involving William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, claiming that is a very plot-driven and integral scene. The reports remained rumors, with director Roberto Orci telling TrekMovie that he would not confirm nor deny the rumors to help keep his options open, and Shatner tweeting that he had not been approached about the role.
Yesterday, Shatner, while attending Wizard World Nashville Comic Con, stated that he was indeed contacted for Star Trek 3 by JJ Abrams several weeks ago while he was visiting Australia. According to Shatner, Abrams called him from London, where he is shooting Star Wars Episode VII, and told him: I’m calling because the director of Star Trek, the next movie, has had an idea where you might be involved, so I’m calling to find out whether you would be interested. Shatner said he told Abrams, It depends on what you do with the character, but I would be delighted.

Shatner stated that Abrams did not want him to tell anyone about being contacted, and Shatner agreed. When Shatner returned from Australia, he realized It’s all over the internet that the director has held an interview and said they want Shatner and Nimoy to be in the next movie. I’ll bet you J.J.’s frothing at the mouth at this point. So the news is out that they have an idea that they want Leonard and myself… they might want Leonard and myself in it. But I would love to do it. But how do you get me fifty years later into the movie? I mean how do you rationalize it. I know it’s science fiction, but even I couldn't come up with an idea. So that’s the news on that.

If the reports are true, this would be the first time that Shatner and Leonard Nimoy appear on screen together as Kirk and Spock since 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and the first time Shatner would play Kirk since 1994’s Star Trek Generations.

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL ABOUT SHATNER IN THE JJ-VERSE?

If they can find a good reason to have Shatner in it and they do it well that is one thing but I am worried that this will just be a poor attempt at fan service and purely there to get more people to see the movie rather than making the movie better just like having Khan in Into Darkness, Khan could have been literally anyone for the movie to still work, I suspect that the only reason it was Khan was because they knew it would help boost the box office numbers.

Oh and why was it JJ making the call? Orci to big to call Captain Kirk himself?

This worries me too for the same reasons as Chris.

Ugh. Please no.

Look, Kirk is my guy, OK? I grew up with the original series and Kirk is Da Man! But..Kirk died. He's gone. "You're dead, Jim. Rest in peace so that we can."

Us old fogies can live in the past 'cause we've got some good memories but today is the future. There are some fine people that have been born since the days of TOS and are living today that have taken up the mantle and Star Trek needs to respect that by taking advantage of it. Patrick Stewart and TNG proved this; Scott Bakula and "Enterpise" proved this..heck, the Alien and Matrix movies proved this. Shall I keep going?

Instead of retreading the same old tired episodes, how about putting out new high-quality Star Trek Universe content using new actors and new ships? How about adventures dealing with something other than the particle/radiation/temporal anomaly/alien of the week? You know, something with a real story?

Star Trek succeeded because it had the bal..er, courage to push the envelope. Where is that being done today using today's actors and theater/game technologies?

Come on, JJ, find and nurture that sense of exploration that was at the core of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek. Boldly Go, man! Boldly Go!!

I get the distinct feeling that bringing Shatner aboard is nothing more than a gimmick to draw in the crowds. I really hope that I'm proved wrong, but I can't say that I have high hopes. Tongue Out

I really wish they would have the confidence in their films to stand away from the original cast. Nimoy's presence in 2009 was perhaps necessary to the plot, but his appearance in Into Darkness was gimmicky at best, cheap at worst. I fear bringing Shatner in the next film will continue the trend set in Darkness.

Ironic in Nimoy's case since the reason he originally wanted to be written out of the movies during the production of WoK was so he WOULDN'T be paraded up on screen for sequel after sequel of franchise milking.

That is disturbing news, while it'll be interesting from a story perspective to see the two Kirks meet each other (assuming he fills the role). But I have to agree with Chris's response, I fear it'll be a poor attempt at fan service. I've been a fan of JJ trek and I'm even less enthusiastic about Roberto Orci being at the helm.

I think I might have been wrong about this all along.

What happened the last time someone got all lens flare in Shatner's face?

god

Yep, it was God and it didn't end well for him.

I'm thinking if Shatner's Kirk had God killed rather than let him have a free trip on the Enterprise then he is going to go completely mental when he sees what JJ has done to his past.

He will lay down some righteous justice destroying that entire alternate reality ensuring that the prime universe continues.

It all makes sense, JJ is a genius, he creates an alternate universe we all despise just so the real Captain Kirk can come back and save us all and in the process he reminds each and every one of us just how awesome the real Kirk is.

Such a day would be immortalised as a holiday akin to Christmas for all Trek fans. We can only hope.

Hopefully it leads to an earlier time when Spock and Kirk were both alive but old, before the events of Generations and that they are trying to repair the timeline from this alternate universe somehow so that it all ends up going back to the Original Star trek Universe we all know and love and ends this JJ verse stuff.

That is a possibility but personally I doubt it will happen for two reasons. The first is real world, the second is in-universe.

Firstly I can't see the producers wanting to kill off the JJ-verse. It is making them too much money and besides I think there are enough people that want to see new adventures with the TOS crew and the only way to really do that without breaking canon is with an alternate timeline.

Secondly, Spock Prime travelled to the JJ-verse several decades after Generations. It was thought that he was killed as no-one in the Prime universe realised that he was actually thrown back in time (creating JJ-verse). Even if the Prime universe were somehow aware of the existence of the JJ-verse they could not have been aware of it before Kirk's death otherwise it stands to reason that Spock Prime would have known that he would have inadvertently caused the JJ-verse to come in to existence and would have taken steps to prevent it. The only way then that Kirk could be involved before his death would be if Spock Prime found a way to leave the JJ-verse and re-enter the Prime universe but at a point before Kirk's death. If Spock Prime were able to travel between universes and wanted to prevent the creation of the JJ-verse then the easiest way to do so would be to either contact his younger self and make sure it never happened or interfere in the event that led to the JJ-verse being created, neither of which would require Kirk's help.

What is this "Generations" of which you all speak? I have never heard of such a thing. *crosses arms*

Kirk lives!
