According to film director Roland Emmerich on Twitter, and Brent Spiner who replies (as seen below) Spiner has been brought on board to star in an Independence Day sequel, most likely to be recast as the character Dr. Brakish Okun, last seen being used by a captured alien to voice the iconic words "Release me". It was assumed that the character of Okun perished in the ensuing gunfire during the 1996 movie, however latest news and DVD commentary of the movie report that he was merely in a coma or rendered unconscious.

Independence Day was released the same year as Star Trek: First Contact and revolves around aliens invading Earth to extinguish the human population and likely harvest the natural resources of the planet. The film also features Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum as the unlikely duo set to end their other-worldly plans.

Spiner has a long history within Star Trek as Lt. Commander Data for The Next Generation but also guest starring as Dr. Arik Soong on Enterprise. After which Spiner became Dr. Nigel Fenway on Threshold, a television series set when the U.S. Navy discovers an unidentified object and a team of experts are assembled.

Finally, Spiner guest-starred, his first recurring role as Bob Wheeler, a down-on-his-luck family man from West Virginia in Night Court.

Nice find FNS! When I heard that a new ID was in the works, I would never have guessed that they would bring back Spiner! I actually liked his character in the original. Of course, my first reaction was... It's Data!

I was so scared that cryptic had hired him as a voice actor...as much as I'd love that the fact that they are downsizing bring in voice talent but losing devs doesn't seem like a great move. But he was awesome in that movie!
