For the Love of Spock. It sounds like a it could be a line from Star Trek the Original Series, But it’s not. It’s the name of Adam Nimoy’s latest project. “The outpouring of emotion after dad died was absolutely overwhelming.” Adam Nimoy said.

“As most of you know on February 27th my father passed away…” Adam said in his Kickstarter video, it also left this documentary he and his father started unfinished. “This project actually began as a collaboration with my dad last year,” Adam Nimoy said, “much work has already been done. We have a strong outline to guide us, we have reached out to a number of people in the Star Trek community to help us, extensive research has been completed and we have compiled a HUGE amount of ST related photos and artifacts.”

Both Leonard and Adam Nimoy knew that the 50th anniversary celebration of the original series was approaching, and planned for the documentary to be revealed then. But with his father’s passing Adam Nimoy said that it became more than a documentary about the evolution of Spock and about the man between the pointed ears and celebrating both of their lives and accomplishments.

Currently For the Love of Spock is seeking $600,000 in crowdfunding via Kickstarter, and has just over $250,000 at the time of this article's publication, and must raise the remaining amount within 18 days. “we lose whatever we have raised from that campaign.” Adam Nimoy said, “We need the community's continued support to meet our goal which will enable us to deliver what I hope will be an entertaining and enlightening documentary about my dad and Mr. Spock”. For those of you aren’t familiar with Kickstarter, it allows you to raise money for projects via crowdfunding, however if you don’t meet or beat the goal you set then you won’t receive any of the money you raised.

With many Kickstarter projects people wonder what the money raised will go to, even after reading the project page. Some people would like to a more specific rundown of the cost, even knowing that it could change slightly. We've reached out to Adam Nimoy for more information on what exactly the $600,000 covers and how that goal was set. We will update you on the specifics as we learn more.

“It became clear that traditional funding was simply going to take too long and have too many caveats,” Adam Nimoy said, “My dad and I did reach out to traditional sources of entertainment financing. But the response was surprisingly underwhelming”. That is when they were approached and asked about crowd funding, which they felt would help tie the community into the documentary more and would help produce this piece in time for the 50th anniversary.

Already Adam Nimoy has gotten support from members of the Star Trek community, including Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies, and who will be narrating this film.

With only a few months left until 2016 is here Adam Nimoy and his production team have a great challenge ahead of them. “It's a complicated, ambitious film and it's going to take some serious time in the editing room.” Adam Nimoy said, “But I have the experience to make it happen and a great team to support me, and we're looking forward to the challenge.” And while it’s not currently clear whether or not this project will reach its crowdfunding goal, we do wish them the best of luck and we can’t wait to see this documentary sometime next year.

Adam Nimoy has directed his fair share of productions, from Gilmore Girls and Party of Five to Sliders and two episodes of Star Trek the Next Generation; Timescape & Rascals. He also worked on a documentary with his father in 2013 called Leonard Nimoy's Boston which covered his “early years growing up in the West End of Boston”. “It was so much fun collaborating with him on that project I wanted to do it again.” Adam Nimoy said.

“Dad and Spock were clearly near and dear to people from all over the world.” Adam Nimoy said, “I am making this movie on behalf of the fans to show our love not only for the First Officer of the Starship Enterprise but also for the artist who gave that First Officer such a rich and dynamic inner life.”

Thank you again for a wonderful article and another great find Krazyik! I seriously can't get enough of your special finds. Keep up the excellent work. I looked at this Kickstarter and felt compelled to support Adam's effort. I do hope he'll be able to meet his goal as this would be a unique gift to Trekdom for the 50th.

A great article about a really interesting project. Unfortunately I'm not confident they'll meet the $600,000 goal they have set for themselves.

Thanks everyone for reading. It was an amazing opportunity and great piece to work on. I do hope that they get this funded. I would agree with Dentari, however over the past four, four and a half years of covering crowdfunding projects (as a freelance journalist or in J-School) I've seen them turn around literally inside of half an hour. But we shall see. There will be a follow up to this once the campaign is over.
