75 years ago today, a boy was born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England[/FONT] and he would go on to become a world renowned actor, the center of one of the largest fandoms to exist, and receive his knighthood in 2010 for his service to drama. Today we celebrate the 75th birthday of Sir Patrick Stewart, best known for his role as Captain Jean Luc Picard in Star Trek and as Doctor Xavier in X-Men.

Stewart said during his knighthood in 2010 that he owes everything to his English teacher, who encouraged him to go into the performing arts. Stewart made his initial appearance on stage with the Manchester's Library Theatre in the mid-60’s, later joining the Royal Shakespeare Company. His TV debut has been attributed to his role as the fire officer on the show Coronation Street, filmed in 1967, however he has credit roles back to 1964 for two separate shows, Theatre 625 and Story Parade.

Throughout his career Stewart has worked on many TV, film, and stage productions. Currently he has 137 combined film and TV roles credited to him; which have earned him two Golden Globes, two Behind the Voice Actors Awards, a Blockbuster Entertainment Award, a Family Film Awards, an Online Film & Television Association Award, a star on the Walk of Fame, a Western Heritage Awards, as well as different nominations. You can see a full listing of his confirmed awards on IMBD. He also received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from both the University of East Anglia, and the University of Leeds.

Stewart has also been a very active member in academic circles. For the past eleven years he has held the post of Chancellor at Huddersfield University. Recently however he has stepped down from that position to be replaced by the Duke of York, Prince Andrew. The ceremony was filled with jokes, laughter, and kind spirits as the two gentlemen greeted one another, and Prince Andrew said “This is a change of command. Sir Patrick has commanded something beyond the stars. I have commanded something floating on the seas.” referencing Stewart's work on Star Trek several times before finally giving him what he said was the only fitting send off. “There’s only one way to say farewell and that’s ‘live long and prosper,” Prince Andrew also gave the famous Vulcan salute. Stewart was hence given the role of Emeritus Chancellor at the university and would work as the understudy. He went on to promise not to be a 11-year old shadow but the perfect understudy for the times when the prince wasn’t available.

So while he isn’t carrying the Olympic torch anymore (which he did, in 2012) Sir Patrick Stewart has done great things in his life, and at the age of 75 he shows no signs of slowing down. From all of us at UFPlanets.com, and our readers, we wish a very Happy Birthday to Sir Patrick Stewart.

A big number! I can't wait to see his new series Blunt. He was the captain I grew up with and I also love him in his other roles. Anyone remember his role from Dune?
