How many of us haven’t wanted to live in the Star Trek universe, or at the very least be part of the show? Well now you have the chance to win a walk-on role and be part of the latest Star Trek movie. Star Trek: Beyond, Paramount, and Bad Robot, have teamed up with a Omaze, a crowdfunding website that gives people the chance to win a once in a lifetime experience - in return the money raised goes to various charities. Of course if you don’t win the walk-on roll, you have the knowledge of knowing your money helped nine different charities, but you’ll also have the chance to be one of six runner-up winners that win some cool Star Trek Memorabilia and a behind the scene visit.

To highlight their charity campaign Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Idris Elba all got together on the set of the Enterprise to film their campaign awareness video and give us a little taste of what life would be like on set; from working to dance parties with Simon Pegg and everything in between.

To participate you don’t have to donate hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The minimum contribution is $10. While larger contributions not only help the charities more, but can earn you a special T-Shirt, a customized video from the cast, an actual prop from the set, plus various other memorabilia. Alternatively if you’ve have $100,000 sitting around that isn’t doing anything you will receive the captain's chair.

The nine charities that will be splitting all the money evenly are:

  • Brave Beginnings: an organization dedicated to ensuring that ventilators and life-saving neonatal equipment are always available to newborns in critical need. Nominated by Zoë Saldana.

  • Camp Sunshine: a place where children with life-threatening illnesses and their families can regroup, re-energize, and restore hope for the future. Nominated by Anton Yelchin.

  • Direct Relief International: one of the premiere disaster relief organizations that operates worldwide. Nominated by Zachary Quinto.

  • Heaven Homes: an organization helping establish children's homes and centers, while providing secure, safe and loving environments where children can be nurtured to realize their full potential. Nominated by Idris Elba.

  • KidsCan: an organization that provides food, clothing and healthcare to disadvantaged youth in New Zealand. Nominated by Karl Urban.

  • Koreatown Youth & Community Center: an organization serving the evolving needs of the Korean American population in the greater Los Angeles area as well as the multi-ethnic Koreatown community. Nominated by John Cho.

  • Make-A-Wish: whose remarkable work is making wishes come true every day for children suffering from life threatening illnesses. Nominated by Chris Pine.

  • Time is Precious: an organization helping to create a more comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for children, which in return helps assist with their treatment and recovery. Nominated by Simon Pegg.

  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital: an organization that is leading the way in advancing cures for childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Nominated by Susan Nimoy in honor of Leonard Nimoy.

The campaign will run from today through September 1. At the end of the campaign the one lucky winner will be flown out to Vancouver to start filming their part for Star Trek: Beyond. While six others will be given a behind the scene tour, meet the cast, and watch as the movie is filmed. Winners will be drawn during the following time periods, 7/14 – 7/18, 7/19 – 7/26, 7/27 – 8/2, 8/3 – 8/9, 8/10 – 8/16, 8/17 – 8/23. With the grand prize winner being drawn from the list of contributors from the launch to the end of the campaign. For the rest of the supporters you’ll receive the rewards appropriate to your contribution level.

I can't keep thinking this was done to mirror what Disney, Star Wars and JJ Abrams did. Still, this is to the benefit of the various charities regardless of intent and for those who care for the JJ Trek stuff, perhaps a golden opportunity. But the perks aside, it's nice to see organisations and individuals practicing more charitable.
