Veteran writer Bryan Fuller has been signed to co-create and serve as showrunner for CBS' new Star Trek series.

So far there have been few details revealed about the new Star Trek show but today it has officially been announced that former Star Trek writer and producer Bryan Fuller will be playing a big part in Star Trek's return to the small screen.

“It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before.” Fuller said in an official statement.

Bryan Fuller%20pic1Bryan Fuller on the set of Star Trek VoyagerBryan Fuller has been a Star Trek fan since a child "My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire." and has previously gone on record stating that he never wanted to be a TV writer but instead wanted to be "a Star Trek writer."

In 1996, Fuller's dream came true getting to write the story for the Deep Space Nine episodes "The Darkness and the Light" and "Empok Nor", both of which were a hit with fans. Most of his involvement with Star Trek was with Voyager, incidentally his least favourite instalment of the franchise at the time (TOS, DS9, TNG and VOY if anyone was wondering), where he worked on twenty episodes starting with "The Raven" and ending with "Friendship One".

Speaking of Fuller coming on board Alex Kurtzman said “Bringing Star Trek back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care. His encyclopedic knowledge of Trek canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”

Given the mixed response Star Trek fans had when hearing of Kurtzman's involvement given the controversial Star Trek reboot movies it is interesting to note that he brings up Fuller's knowledge of Star Trek canon and his love of Roddenberry's vision, potentially a very smart move by CBS to appease those Star Trek fans that weren't too happy with the JJ reboots by Paramount.

Does the news of a hardcore Star Trek fan at the helm finally get you excited about the new Star Trek series or is it boldly going nowhere?
