It was only yesterday we revealed that Bryan Fuller was coming on board as the Head Writer of the upcoming Star Trek TV series, much to the delight of fans across the internet. An interview with Bryan Fuller from 2013, gives us an insight as to what direction the new show could take.
In the interview, Fuller revealed that actress Angela Bassett would be his choice to fill the role as Captain of the USS Reliant, supplemented by Rosario Dawson who would take on the trusted role of first officer. The Reliant being the infamous starship that Kahn hijacked in order to use the Genesis device.
Expanding on this further, Fuller mentioned "let [the Enterprise] be the movies and let that be their story. I would love to do something on the Reliant." Specifically he also expressed back in 2008 a desire to return to the 'spirit' of the Original Star Trek Series from 1966, "I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude. I loved Voyager and DS9, but they seem to have lost the ‘60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin."
Many fans have been wondering whether the series would be set in the prime universe or the timeline set off by JJ Abrams in his 2009 reboot. CBS haven't announced which timeline the new series will be set in, but what we do know is that Fuller has previously stated a preference for the reboot timeline, saying "I think there’s something very exciting about the new J.J. Abrams-verse, and there’s also kind of an interesting reinvention. How would The Next Generation evolve from that?"
The interviews are now a few years old and therefore won't necessarily reflect what we'll see next January; the opinions of CBS might overrule any creative decisions by producers or there may well have just been a change of heart by Kurtzman and Fuller. But they do give us insight into how these creative leaders view Star Trek as a franchise and what directions it could proceed with.
