Since it's release in 2010 Star Trek Online has seen more than a few changes over the years. To date the game has had two expansion packs; Legacy of Romulus which added the Romulans as a playable faction (albeit one ultimately tied to the Federation or the Klingon Empire depending on the choices you make) and Delta Rising which fleshed out the Delta Quadrant with races and characters from Star Trek: Voyager.

Now, after 6 years and 11.5 'seasons' Perfect World Entertainment Inc and Cryptic Studios have announced Star Trek Online: Agents of Yesterday, Star Trek Online's third expansion which celebrates 50 years of Gene Roddenberry's beloved sci-fi franchise Star Trek.

Season 11.5 represented a pretty major update to Star Trek Online with a revamped skill system, new visual slots, secondary options for the specialization system and the new featured episode, Temporal Front, which features the Na’Kuhl, the aliens encountered by the crew of Enterprise during World War II who aligned themselves with the Nazi's whilst fighting the Temporal Cold War. Agents of Yesterday, which launches in Summer 2016, also has a link to the past with the expansion being set entirely during the Star Trek: The Original Series era.

In the new expansion players will be able to create a new Captain within the timeline of Star Trek: The Original Series. To add to the immersion the expansion will feature authentic and era appropriate ships, equipment, locations and characters!

“Star Trek Online has been able to explore other eras in the franchise from Star Trek: Enterprise to Star Trek: Voyager, while continuing to add to the core Star Trek narrative,” said Steve Ricossa, executive producer of Star Trek Online. “The 50th Anniversary of Star Trek presents a unique opportunity and challenge for our team, to faithfully venture back in time to one of the most iconic science-fiction settings and eras in television history. Combining Star Trek: The Original Series with Star Trek Online allows us to take players on some new and unique adventures in a time period that is beloved by fans.”

Agents of Yesterday will take players back to The Original Series, primary colours, short skirts and flat headed Klingons included!

So far five new era appropriate ships have been confirmed to join the already available Constitution class cruiser, whilst Cryptic haven't yet confirmed the entire ship list we do know that the Daedalus class science vessel will definitely be available. As for the new (or should I say old?) characters Walter Koenig will be appearing reprising (or should that be wepwising?) his role of Pavel Chekov and Chris Doohan will be playing Scotty, the role made famous by his father, the late James Doohan.

Hrm.... will reserve judgement until its on tribble..... good to see Konig, and Chris Doohan but still this is Cryptic, and it will need to be at least good to stand up to the Judgement of Trekkies

Tbh I'm loving the new revamp of the TOS ships, its so nostalgic! I have to agree with Jordan though we need more KDF and Rommie love. Although Rommies do have the T'varo which was present in TOS. So maybe we can discount them somewhat.

The Ranger class ship looks amazing. I honestly didn't expect to see any content like this come out for STO any time soon. The apparent lack of Klingon and Romulan ships is a bit strange, but I'm sure there's more than they're letting on in this first glimpse.

Well, this was a lot more interesting than I was expecting it. Kudos Cryptic for the surprise.
