As we've previously covered the 4th entry in the reboot movie series, 14th overall, was going to happen for quite some time but in the last 24 hours some new facts have been revealed and the rumoured involvement of one particular character has been officially confirmed.

latest?cb=20100128190518&path prefix=enChris Hemsworth will return as George Kirk, James' father."In the next instalment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father."

Reads the official press release from Paramount who will once again be working in conjunction with Skydance and Bad Robot.

It's also been confirmed that Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, best known for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be returning to reprise the role of George Kirk from 2009's Star Trek. In the alternative universe, James T Kirk never met his father as George Kirk crashed the U.S.S. Kelvin in to the Narada in order to allow the crew, including his pregnant wife, to escape. How exactly George Kirk will appear hasn't yet been officially confirmed but since it is pretty certain he is dead in this timeline time travel is the most likely possibility, that said maybe the Kirks ends up in the Nexus and they go horse riding together. The inclusion of George Kirk could be pretty interesting especially since James T Kirk spends some of Star Trek Beyond questioning his own motives for joining Starfleet and the legacy of his father, a man he never thought he would get the opportunity to meet.

Another man that will of course be present is J.J. Abrams, who will once again serve as a producer. Abrams has already publicly stated that the role of Chekov will not be recast for the film so at some point the writers will need to consider how the character gets written out and to perhaps create a new character to take over his bridge station.

Speaking of writers, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions and alongside J.J Abrams, while David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

What do you think about the return of George Kirk? How do you think Chekov should be written out? What do you think about Simon Pegg not working on the screenplay?

It's a shame that there's going to be time travel, I feel like time travel is a bit overused at times but it's necessary if they want Chris Hemsworth back in his role. I remember reading a post on Reddit about this, and I agree with their suggestions. They should have a little conversation between a couple of characters and mention that Chekov has been promoted and reassigned to the USS Reliant as first officer. It's the nicest thing to do. They should just stick a random Starfleet officer in the Navigators seat (as it is necessary) and not try to create another important character.

...I feel like time travel is a bit overused at times...
Is there a medal for understatement of the year? As that completely nailed it!!! Big Grin lol

To be honest I would at this junction prefer almost any other method of bringing back George Kirk. I'd even say as a ghost or as a Q - both of which sound ridiculous. But... time travel.... again.... nnnggdddhhhh..... Banghead

Chekov really need to be promoted off the ship. Can't really imagine them doing it in any other way as they will have to acknowledge that he is no longer sitting there and I don't think it should be re-cast.

As for Simon Pegg, well he didn't start off writing Beyond either. In fact I think he replaced Payne and McKay after they had worked on it for a couple of years. So lets wait and see! Smile

Personally, I would probably have recast Chekov, and that's not being insensitive to Yelchin. If you think of all the canon material about Chekov, that's a lot of stuff to just ignore. In this case, I believe the character is bigger than the actor and should continue. I think Anton would agree. (A fitting tribute could have been added to the end of the movie.)

As for the plot/subplot, sounds pretty darn interesting. I would imagine it will be a subplot to the movie, however.
