More information about the new Star Trek series has been coming out, we know the ship and we know how it will be streamed, but in recent days, more news has come out about the crew. What we know about the lead character is that they will be female, making this the 2nd female lead in Star Trek and she won't be a captain. The lead character will be Lt. Commander, Bryan Fuller has an interest in looking at the story from another angle and portraying a character who is going through their own personal journey.

According to danofgeek.com, she will be the highest ranking crewmember on the ship, which does make her captain of the ship, just not captain in military rank. There have been examples of ship captains below the rank of captain through the history of Star Trek, memory alpha has a page of Starfleet captains, if you are interested in looking up previous occurrences, usually, it has been a short term arrangement, so it will be interesting to see the way Discovery handles this.

What else we know about the new series is that there is going to be an openly gay character, among the expected seven main characters. We don't know anything more about the rest of the cast just yet, but it promises to be the most diverse cast there has been on a Star Trek series, for better or for worse. To me, this sounds like a real challenge to make it work, fitting in so much diversity into a TV series and present it in a manner where the audience cares about the story, not the amount of diversity.

I still look forward to it and will be watching, how about you? Do the character roles matter much to you or are you just happy to see something new?

Maybe we'll end up watching them do convoy duty for an entire season Tongue Out

Very interesting that a Lt. Commander is the highest ranking officer on this ship. I wonder what classification, crew size and mission the ship will embark on. Maybe we'll end up watching them do convoy duty for an entire season Tongue Out
I am getting the distinct impression that the Lt Cmdr, is not the highest ranking officer, as it seems that they are wanting the character to not be the Commanding Officer. Because of this, the show will take an interesting turn...

I'm kinda open to the narration style. But any final opinions or thoughts can only be formed after at least viewing the second episode or pilot to get the gist of the show itself. I personally wished the timeline would continue DS9 or Voyager but oh well.

I agree with mack, I never liked the idea of going back instead of going forward even when I eventually liked archer's enterprise.
