How close are we to a Universal Translator?

Waverly Labs introduces 'The Pilot', a mobile language translator

Just a few years ago, the idea you could fly to Spain, Greece, or France and be able to converse with the locals would mean working with language teachers or trying to teach yourself a new language. Today, it may be as simple as a pair of earpieces and your mobile phone. Waverly Labs has introduced 'The Pilot', and mobile phone app that comes along with a pair of earphones.

Waverly Labs claim to be working with the latest in speech recognition, machine translation and wearable technology to allow their product to work offline and overseas. The idea is that you will speak your native tongue and the earpiece you give the person you are speaking to will translate it into their native tongue. Then when they speak, you will hear it in your native tongue.

In a Q&A with the tech team at Waverly, they were asked it's speed of translation and its translation ability. They were quick to let people know that the translation did take a few seconds and machine translation is still a little off, but the more it is used the better it gets at interpreting. Now both parties who are speaking must wear the earpieces to do translation so it will not just translate everything that is said around you, but it is a first step to getting that kind of technology up and running.

You can get more information about 'The Pilot' at the Waverly Labs website. Forbes has done a really nice article about the pilot and you can read that here. Of course you can find the Q&A I mention above plus a lot more press on this item here, http://www.waverlylabs.com/blog/

Google translate we sometimes use at work and that sometimes can be useful with it's speaking feature providing you knownwhat language they speak but if they can't tell you it's a bit useless! Hopefully it shouldn't be too far off now!!!

Hopefully we aren't too far off of having a fully working one. I am terrible with languages and this would go a long way with going on holiday abroad xD
