Battlefield 1 - The Dawn of all Out War

With Battlefield 1 being the first of its kind, a World War 1 game, does it manage to add to the long Battlefield franchise, or add to the idea of Battlefield now competing with Call of Duty?

Battlefield: a franchise which has been around for a very long time but over the years has become stagnated. With Battlefield’s 3, 4 and Hardline being mostly the same game, with very little changes, everyone expects the same thing from EA and DICE whenever we hear the name ‘Battlefield’. With this latest addition to the franchise, they have pushed the boat out a bit more, going to an era which no one has seen in a game. Ever… Welcome to ‘Battlefield 1’.

attachment.php?attachmentid=6087&d=1479065143The general theme of ‘Battlefield 1’ is, I am sure you guessed it, World War 1; the “war to end all wars”. Exploring the first major conflict between the great empires from around the globe, ‘Battlefield’ has plenty of realms to explore, giving players an experience different from every other ‘Battlefield’. With the first tanks being rolled out, trench warfare, the use of mustard gas and many other weapons in the war, DICE certainly had a lot going for them. The most notable of which is the Behemoth, a large vehicle that is deployed when a team is losing by a large majority to attempt to balance the game, these include a large Zeppelin, a Dreadnought and an Armoured Train, these shake the foundation of any match.

Originally, I was sceptical, as I was waiting and hoping for another Battlefield 2142, but now that I have gotten my hands on it, I am blown away! The game looks and feels like Star Wars Battlefront (but that is to be expected, after all they are running on the same engine). With that in mind, Frostbite is a powerful and beautiful engine, so it runs great for this game. The disappointing limit on the destruction of the environment in Battlefield 3 and 4 reduced the overall experience, compared to Bad Company 2. But with this limit lifted, and the full destruction being brought back to light, the franchise feels better than ever.

Driving a Mark V British tank through a building, crushing and entrenching enemy forces with biplanes dogfighting above and a bayonet charge occurring in the field next to me, is nothing short of spectacular and sums up the ‘Battlefield 1’ experience. All-out war is waged in what can only be described as the best ‘Battlefield’ game since Bad Company 2.

‘Battlefield 1’ cannot be reviewed simply within the gameplay experience, but also the campaign which is split into 5 different ‘war stories’ (as DICE named them) which are 5 different tales from multiple aspects of the war. With each story varying in length and personality they each provide a personable experience. The first of which focuses on a new tank driver, who joins a crew of experienced Mark V officers, from there you find yourself flying biplanes, navigating no mans land to get your co-pilot home. The war then progresses towards the deserts at the south reaches of the Ottoman Empire, facing down against a empire which has ruled over the land for many years as a simple freedom fighter.

The campaign that was gripping and emotional, sadly was too short but it was well made with a touching tribute at the end of the final story. The multiplayer continues the tradition of 'Battlefield' focusing on larger scale engagements with Conquest and other smaller Team Deathmatch games, providing many avenues for you to explore. The experience itself, even on an Xbox, is good looking whilst also smooth, a fitting addition to the long 'Battlefield' franchise.

With the changes and additions to the franchise, this game definitely feels like it isn't attempting to do the same as Call of Duty, with regular releases for the same franchises - 'Battlefield 1' adds new dynamics to a franchise that needed additional features. The game does a great job at delivering an enjoyable one, whilst still honouring those who fell in the war.

Have you played Battlefield 1? What are your thoughts on the game overall?

Nice review, unfortunately, Battlefield isn't a series I ever really played, the idea of going back to WW1 is interesting. To me though, Battlefield has never seemed like it was copying CoD in any of the games, if anything, I found it a little harder to play than the CoD series, back when I played games like this. Not that I was any good at them anyway!
