Visor Like Glasses Let Blind People See Again

A remarkable Headset called the eSight Glasses let Blind People see again.

By CoalSephos 3 Weeks Ago
A revolutionary device called "eSight 3", supported by The University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Centre, John Hopkins University, University Health Network and many others has given the power for blind people to finally see in real time.

What is it and how does it work?

The device has a design similar to Geordi La Forge's Visor in TNG and allows the wearer to see much more than you would with the naked eye. It's uses a "High-Speed, High-Definition Camera that captures everything the user is looking at." It displays it on two OLED screens directly in front of the wearer's eyes and has no lag or visual stuttering. It is customisable to the user's preference and prevents nausea by maximizing side peripheral vision.

What eye conditions can it help?

It works for a variety of medical conditions such as Cone-Rod Dystrophy, (The Loss of cone cells, which can make your vision deteriorate to 20/200.), Forms of Glaucoma, and Stargardt's Disease, (Vision loss, develops typically before the age of 20.) to name a few. The full list can be found on their website https://www.esighteyewear.com/technology.

Sounds great, what's the cost?

The piece of kit is very technologically advanced, but comes with a hefty $10,000 price tag, making practical use for the general public unlikely. However if you have the budget, nursing homes or charities that work closely with blind people could obtain the "eSight 3" and allow legally blind people to see their loved ones for either the first time in a long time, or even see their children or parents for the first time. They have also sold over 1,000 units so far, despite the cost.

Anything to prove this works?

This page on their website shows all the captured and recorded moments of their device being used in a charming and heart warming manner. There are pages on this website which tells the stories and the experiences of people that have used this device and how it has changed their life because of it.

In Summary

Even with the price tag as it is, the technology is extremely advanced and if you have the money, very worthwhile getting if you or your loved ones live with conditions such as blindness or any of the other problems listed on their website. It is an amazing apparatus which will hopefully becoming more affordable in the future.

Pretty neat stuff. When Star Trek "tech" becomes reality.

I'm eagerly waiting for personal transporters so I can have a 1 minute commute to work instead of 30-60 minute one. Smile

Awesome! Let's hope they come up with ideas to make such devices available to people which actually need them!
