Cryptic Studios will soon be celebrating it's 8th anniversary, the game which originally launched in February 2010 will begin its celebrations on the 23rd of January on PC. For console owners, you will have to wait till a later date to celebrate the anniversary, but it is coming! Additionally, Cryptic Studios have teamed up with Loot Crate to give away subscriptions to help celebrate, Loot Crates will also have codes for STO in them as well, you can read more about this here.

Many of you have already spotted the server wide giveaways, which were discussed on our forums here, currently there is still a range of T5 ships to claim!

But once we hit January 23, captains face their final battle in the war against the genocidal Tzenkethi. In the new featured episode “Scylla & Charibdis”, players must find a way to stop a new escalation by the Tzenkethi fleet that puts the entire quadrant in immediate danger. While warping from system to system in pursuit of the enemy, captains receive communication from Captain Geordi La Forge (voiced by LeVar Burton) that an unexpected ally has offered to help finally put an end to these deadly attacks. The update also introduces a new modification feature and special events to celebrate the game’s anniversary.

So what's coming this anniversary? Here's a neat little list!

New Featured Episode – Captains must rally the fleet to stand in the way of the Tzenkethi’s path of destruction through the Alpha Quadrant in the new episode “Scylla & Charibdis.”

Re-Engineering – This new feature allows players to change the mods on their existing items, including weapons. There is discussion on our forums about this here.

Omega Molecule Stabilization – Back by popular demand, players can join this event to collect Omega particles that Q has hidden across space. Stabilizing these molecules will yield prize vouchers, which can be redeemed for this year’s anniversary ship, the T6 Denorios-class Bajoran Interceptor.

8th Anniversary Party Poppers – Captains can meet up with Q to score a special event party popper, which allows them to generate exciting new effects!

LootCrate Giveaway – Players can follow Star Trek Online on Facebook and Twitter to find out how they can enter to win a one-year subscription to the Star Trek Mission Crate from Loot Crate, which offers exclusive Star Trek apparel and collectibles every two months. Starting at the end of this month, each crate will also include codes to unlock in-game items for Star Trek Online, including starships, Bridge Officers, gear and exclusive emotes.

And that ship? Well, the Denorios-class Bajoran Interceptor [T6] is the event reward that you can get with the 8th Anniversary Prize Vouchers, you need 1,000 of these, however 400 are awarded to you from the first time you complete the featured episode. This will no doubt be a nice addition for anyone who wants to roleplay a Bajoran character, or those on a limited budget who rely on free ships! You can read the full stats here and discuss the ship on our forums here.

With all that said, I shall leave you with this video.

So what do you think about the 8th anniversary? Looking forward to what's on offer?

The giveaways were a good way of getting people back into the game and actually see how much content there is to cover up on with reputation, specializations, admiralty, episodes, etc. I think with the announce of the Discovery lockbox though, it's definitely bringing in alot of new players to STO definitely - if not just the returning ones.

What I personally like about all of this are the active blog posts and community interactions as a result. Dev blogs are the way to go, to have current member base hyped about the game.

From what I see, they are always very good at making blog posts! They also like to keep in touch with a wide array of communities, such as our own.

I'm hoping that the upcoming expansion has a lot for us to do in the Gamma Quadrant and hopefully we'll be able to share adventures with everyone who comes back because of the Discovery Lockbox. Wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a couple of Discovery based episodes either.
