Evil Overlord - Quick Play Card game

Evil Overlord is a quick, and simple card game where you build an army, competing with other players to become the one true Evil Overlord.

Evil Overlord is one of the games I got to try out at the latest MCM ComicCon in London. It is the 2nd card game by Shades of Vengeance that I have played, the first I covered last year, Evil Overlord contains may of the same creatures, with similar abilities, the downside is that you will need other people to play it with! 3 to 10 players is recommended for this game, and it is fast paced enough to get in multiple rounds, see if you can take the crown from another, or hold onto your hard earned title!

Size: 146.7 KBCards are dealt to each player, and when everyone is ready, they turn cards over at the same time. At this point, trading is open, you call a number and if another player wants to trade that amount, you exchange the cards face down, then look at them in your hand. Blind trading means no one sees what you have, and you don't know what you are going to get! You can build an army with one of four types (two of four if you use the Diplomat in the Dark Elf army), you will trade out monsters you don't want, and hope you get some, or all of the ones that you do want.

When you have done trading, you call out that you have done, this means that no more trading can happen between yourself, and other players. Once all players have finished trading, everyone selects their army, and turns them face up. Active abilities are then resolved, from order of highest power (the number in the top right) to the lowest power, it is also important to read your cards before you pick an army. There are some ability cards, like the Dark Elf card "Revolt", which will result in you losing the game if you selected a Dark Elf army.

After all active abilities have been resolved, you can then add up the total power of your army, and the highest power will win. Make sure to take note of any passive abilities, such as the "Imps" get +1 power for every other imp in the army, and Mechs will often get additional power verse other army types. Dark Elves get monsters that are hard to target, and Undead get abilities, and spells that can hurt your opponents. But blind trading will make it very hard to work out what other people are going to be using.

But what are my overall thoughts? One of my first thoughts were a memory of the old game, Happy Families, except with monsters, more players and abilities. The other thought I had of the game is that it makes for a very good icebreaker game, if you have a group of new people, or waiting for more people to show up, this type of game is quick and it gets everyone talking. You could also choose to just keep playing it, and declare the person who won the most times by the end of the night as the Evil Overlord, you can then all buy them a drink!

I also haven't yet decided which of the army types are my favourite just yet, I'm torn between the Dark Elf, and the Mechs, of course, why not be diplomatic about it, and have both!

The game is currently on Kickstarter, which you can find here, should you wish to purchase it, there are also videos on that page, demonstrating how the game is played.

I didn't even finish reading this article, and I had already started searching for this game on the Internet. It took me about half an hour to realize that this is a board game, not an online game...

I should have been careful and read to the end. How stupid of me. Too bad it's not online! I love card games and online games. I play <link removed> since I was little, and until now, I have spent my free time playing card games. Too bad Evil Overlord is a board game. It looks very addictive.
