For a special Ships of the Fleet Sunday, we take a look at Deep Space Nine.

Before the release of the final instalment of the Anti-Borg wave, we at the FNS have decided to show off DS9 in Ships of the Fleet Sunday as part of our celebration.

Background

Origins: Ronald D. Moore, DS9 producer and screenwriter said,

"I'd like us to be remembered as the Trek series that dared to be different. We took chances in a franchise that has every reason to play it safe and spoon-feed the same old thing to the audience week after week. We challenged the characters, the audience, and the Star Trek universe itself. Sometimes we failed (sometimes spectacularly) but we never stopped trying to push the show into new directions."

As stated by Ronald D. Moore, Star Trek always strived to be new and different. This was a common theme throughout Star Trek, such as having one of the first female characters be given command of a starship. Deep Space Nine, as a majority of fans will know, wasn't originally a Starfleet installation, originally it was called Terok Nor by its builders, the Cardassians over a subjected Bajor, Terok Nor was only ever a mineral refinery at this time. When Bajor was finally free its system and the stations occupying it was given to them.

Design: Deep Space Nine consists of three main areas: The central core which contains the power core, the Promenade and Ops. The habitat ring which provides quarters for crew and visitors and is connected to the rest of the station by large crossover bridges and the outer docking ring (otherwise known informally as the "outer ring") which can accommodate numerous small ships and has six docking pylons to allow larger vessels to dock. It was a primarily civilian station but during the Dominion War saw massive upgrades to weapons and armour. No details are actually listed as to how many weapons it had or what kinds of weapons it had installed.

Armaments

69 Type X/XI Phaser beam arrays: Phaser array is a devastating weapon comprised of an arrangement of phaser emitters located in strategic areas of a starship, space station, or other vessels. In the 23rd century, phaser arrays had smaller numbers of emitters and were commonly referred to as phaser banks. By the 24th century, Starfleet began to fit its vessels and facilities with phaser arrays that contained much larger numbers of emitters. The arrays aboard a Galaxy-class starship could channel vast energy in a short time frame, capable of cutting through a mile of solid granite in seconds.

66 Photon Torpedo Launchers: The photon torpedo used shaped charges of antimatter that, when they came in contact with conventional matter or hard energy barriers, released massive amounts of gamma-ray photons, hence the weapon's name. They were developed in part due to the requirement for a weapon, which unlike phasers, could be used at faster than light speeds which made the Photon torpedo very unique, useful and deadly.

The Akira had the unique trait of having a 360 degrees arc of torpedo fire while still having a predominantly forward facing array. This ship could unleash a massive barrage of torpedo fire from the front. The weapon rack alone carried 13 torpedo launchers (Including 2 quantum) while the body housed the other 6. And had a devastating 375 torpedoes, meaning it has a higher ammunition count than the dedicated torpedo ship the Steamrunner class.

Defences

Deflector Shields: Most starships are fitted with deflector shields, often projected from a deflector dish, to protect them from particle impacts which, particularly at high velocities, could cause huge amounts of damage. While basic deflectors and deflector beams could provide minimal protection from weapons fire and basic mishaps, the majority of advanced starships were also fitted with more powerful shielding which could be activated in tactical situations. However, these shields were sufficiently powerful that they also blocked out transporter beams. Shields could be configured in two forms; ellipsoid form shielding, common in Federation starships in the 24th century, which projected a shield bubble around a starship; or contour-conforming shielding which was projected much closer to the ship's hull, providing more specifically localized protection. Some shielding systems also allowed shielding over specific areas of a ship to be activated or deactivated to provide protection for a specific area only and presumably reduce power consumption not protecting the entire hull.

Microfiber Reinforced Ablative Armor: Was a type of protective hull plating used on starships, which possessed a capability for rapidly dissipating the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire.

My Thoughts: DS9 for me was my favourite ST series, I loved the epic space battles and even found some of the first season episodes interesting too. For me Deep Space Nine was all the Star Trek ships we have seen rolled into one, it had firepower and luxury like the Galaxy, Advanced systems like the Sovereign and maintenance problems like a 50-year-old BoP.

Unfortunately, some changes will be occurring with SFS, the main one being that I will be removing the scenario's after I finish the Akira. This is because I have been super busy and what not (excuses, excuses) What I am thinking of doing, however, is having the ships of that month fight each other in a continuity breaking battle royal. I still want to actually demonstrate cool tactics to use with the vessels while making it fun. If you have any other suggestions please PM me!

Apart from that leave your comments on DS9 and as always...
Live long and Prosper!
