Ships of the Fleet Sunday VOL 5. Akira Class.

The fifth installment of Ships of the Fleet Sunday covers the famous Akira class.

By KaiserKirk Sun 24 Jun, 2018 10:26 PM
It's finally arrived, the final instalment of the Anti-Borg ship designs, so far we have looked at the nimble and spartan Sabre, the long-range sniper the Steamrunner, the good for everything Norway, the speedy ship that can pack a punch being the Defiant class and now, my most beloved ship in Star Trek the NX influenced Akira class.

Background

Origins: A design sketch of the USS Akira shown the vessel bearing the registry NCC-2497. In an unpublished interview with author Larry Nemecek, designer Jaeger said he simply used the four-digit number of his then-phone extension for that registry; to conform to Starfleet practice, the number "6" was added by Mike Okuda and the film's art department to make "62497," a number then approved by producer Rick Berman. At the same time, Jaeger said, two other ship names and registries were approved as back-ups, if needed, to the USS Thunderchild actually seen on film as NCC-63549: the USS Rabin (named after former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin) as NCC-63293, and the USS Spector (NCC-63549). The ship scale sheet showing the backup names and registries can be found on John Eaves' blog.

Design: It is fairly well known that the Akira and NX class are almost identical. The Akira-class design ditched Starfleet's usual saucer-secondary hull-nacelle design and more closely resembled the NX-class with its catamaran shaped hull. The engineering section was tucked under the main saucer, which housed the main deflector, and some of the ship's tactical systems. The nacelles were connected via long catamaran type structures, which were then connected to a large weapons pod, housing several photon torpedo launchers.

The catamaran pylons offered a degree of protection for the main bridge, which retained its traditional location at the top of the saucer. The theme of spartan and narrow silhouettes throughout the Anti-Borg program continued over with the Akira as head-on would be a very slim target to hit. The two pylons next to the bridge also act as protection for it meaning that Starfleet did give some thought into the 'weak spot' of almost all Starfleet vessels. This ship had a dangerous array of fire including a torpedo role bar facing forward and backwards and two sides on torpedo launchers giving the ship a rather unique ability to fire torpedoes side on in a broadside maneuver.

The ship was primarily a combat ship but still supported a navigation/main deflector dish but again another common theme in the Anti-Borg program is to have the deflector buried in the main hull making another potential 'weak spot' harder to hit. One of the most outstanding features that just shows how much detail went into the design of the ship is the fact that the main hanger encompasses almost a third of the ship's saucer section allowing the Akira to act as a fighter carrier as well as a cruiser, it is one of the only ships in Star Trek to have a hanger bay that runs from one end of the ship to the other, allowing fighters to travel from the front hanger doors, through the interior of the ship and then out the rear hanger doors.

Because it was so dedicated to fighters it could often be seen acting as a carrier for the start of a battle as well as a torpedo cruiser, picking off ships at a distance while deploying its massive array of fighters. The ship was also the go-to for rescue or evacuation mission especially in situations where transporters didn't work or weren't advisable.

Type: Heavy Cruiser

Decks: 26

Crew: 500, with an evacuation limit of 4,500.

Warp: 9.8 as its maximum warp for 12 hours, relatively fast for a ship of its scale. A normal cruising speed of warp 6.

Sublight: 2 sublight engines at the rear of the main dish.

My Thoughts: I have made it clear over my time on the UFP that the Akira and Ambassador (Three please don't assimilate me, the Miranda is still a great ship!) are my favourite ships. I like the Akira because of how interesting and Unique it is, its design was something never seen before (Well until ENT when it looked like Starfleet just copied the NX class) and the design was actually well thought out, I can guarantee you its the only ship with a hanger bay that runs through the beam of the ship and side facing torpedo launchers seen on Star Trek.

The ship is given so much backstory and it actually feels like someone sat down at a table and spend a lot of time thinking through the design. It was a ship constantly seen in DS9 and even that amazing episode from VOY were the Doctor is on the Prometheus. I would not want to be a Galor commander seeing a fleet of these ship killers coming towards them!

Oh, and if anyone is wondering my least favourite ships are the Norway and all the Klingon vessels from DIS, the Fed vessels in the show don't look half bad and some are really cool except for the Discovery itself. (Comment your favourite and least favourite ships in Star Trek below the article!)

Length: 464.43 meters

Armaments

6 Type-X Phaser Beam Arrays: Phaser array is a devastating weapon comprised of an arrangement of phaser emitters located in strategic areas of a starship, space station, or other vessels. In the 23rd century, phaser arrays had smaller numbers of emitters and were commonly referred to as phaser banks. By the 24th century, Starfleet began to fit its vessels and facilities with phaser arrays that contained much larger numbers of emitters. The arrays aboard a Galaxy-class starship could channel vast energy in a short time frame, capable of cutting through a mile of solid granite in seconds.

19 Photon Torpedo Launchers: The photon torpedo used shaped charges of antimatter that, when they came in contact with conventional matter or hard energy barriers, released massive amounts of gamma-ray photons, hence the weapon's name. They were developed in part due to the requirement for a weapon, which unlike phasers, could be used at faster than light speeds which made the Photon torpedo very unique, useful and deadly. The Akira had the unique trait of having a 360 degrees arc of torpedo fire while still having a predominantly forward facing array. This ship could unleash a massive barrage of torpedo fire from the front. The weapon rack alone carried 13 torpedo launchers (Including 2 quantum) while the body housed the other 6. And had a devastating 375 torpedoes, meaning it has a higher ammunition count than the dedicated torpedo ship the Steamrunner class.

Defences

Deflector Shields: Most starships are fitted with deflector shields, often projected from a deflector dish, to protect them from particle impacts which, particularly at high velocities, could cause huge amounts of damage. While basic deflectors and deflector beams could provide minimal protection from weapons fire and basic mishaps, the majority of advanced starships were also fitted with more powerful shielding which could be activated in tactical situations. However, these shields were sufficiently powerful that they also blocked out transporter beams. Shields could be configured in two forms; ellipsoid form shielding, common in Federation starships in the 24th century, which projected a shield bubble around a starship; or contour-conforming shielding which was projected much closer to the ship's hull, providing more specifically localized protection. Some shielding systems also allowed shielding over specific areas of a ship to be activated or deactivated to provide protection for a specific area only and presumably reduce power consumption not protecting the entire hull.

Microfiber Reinforced Ablative Armour: Was a type of protective hull plating used on starships, which possessed a capability for rapidly dissipating the energy impacts from directed energy weapon fire.

Auxiliary Craft:
  • 10 shuttlecraft: Used for any number of missions but rarely combat, most likely runabouts, during wartime they would be used as bombers once torpedo rollbars had been installed.
  • 10 work bees: A Workbee is a type of small utility craft which is used throughout the Federation. The name, sometimes split into two words, Work Bee, is derived from the craft's small size and the distinctive yellow colour which most 'bees were painted. They are also referred to as cargo management units.
  • 40 fighters: most likely the famed Peregrin-class of the Dominion war. Fighters would be used as small attack craft that would harass larger targets or engage in dogfights with other fighters.
  • 5 Shuttlepods: Small auxiliary craft that are attached to starships and starbases. They are often smaller than shuttlecraft and originally were mainly used for short-range travel with no warp drive. By the 24th century, however, advances in warp technology permitted some warp capability in craft as small as a shuttlepod.

Bridge: The bridge was most likely the most spacious and 'diplomatic' of the Anti-Borg program though still small.

Scenario

The USS Avenger-B sat dormant in one of the many drydocks that orbit Mars, slowly she awoke, first her many windows that have been only dark for the past 4 months of construction were filled with a bright white light, then its massive pair of warp nacelles beamed with red and blue, finally as the shuttles arrived to dock the deflector slowly pulsated blue streaks of powerful light before calming down. It had only been a few hours but the crew was ready and so the Avenger-B slowly slipped out of its drydock.

"Alright, let's give her a test run... helm, plot a loop around Jupiter, engage!" The newly promoted captain ordered.

The Akira class jumped to warp at incredible speeds, all was going well for the new crew and Starfleet was finally rebuilding its lost assets from the Dominion War, things, for the first time in a long time, were finally looking a little better.

It had been only an hour at warp 3 when the first warnings trickled in, first some small stations lost contact then bigger colonies. The USS Tavs, an old Excelsior picked up the Borg cube on sensors before jumping at high warp to warn Starfleet. The situation was clear, the Borg were back and yet again on a warpath straight for Earth. The entire sector was put on Red-Alert as a taskforce consisting of ships stationed at Sol and any Starfleet vessel in the area that could arrive in time. The Klingon's sent a fleet to support the UFP along with the new Cardassian republic that depended on the Federation for food and supplies. So far a blockade of 46 vessels was positioned to intercept the Borg in the Asteroid Belt were preliminary defences had been placed after the surprise attack on Earth by the Breen.

The crew of the Avenger-B were working hard and fast to get the ship ready for any boarding attempts. The Captain and the first officer were in deep conversation, discussing tactics and home-field advantages when suddenly a busy bridge came to a halt. The captain looked at the still faces. Most of them were trying to hide a look of dread, all were looking at the main view screen. Through the stray asteroids... an object. Its distinct edges and menacing green glow shot fear and panic throughout the fleet.

The cube bulldozed right through the outer layer of the Asteroid Belt, disintegrating or ramming any in its path. The Distance was closing rapidly so the Admiral enacted his controversial plan. Admiral Lock had been was an old Dominion War veteran and like much of the bras in Starfleet. He was using the tried and true method of completely surrounding the enemy and hammering it from all sides. Many captains who were experienced with battling the Borg protested. Including the Avenger's captain, he had been a Lt on the Enterprise during the Battle of Wolf 359. He had seen the complete destruction of an entire fleet. But what could he do apart from following orders?

Name: 320x240.jpg
Views: 761
Size: 22.6 KBThe fleet broke up into 6 sections, the Avenger-B was part of section Beta along with 6 Sabres, 2 Mirandas outfitted with a torpedo bar, one Excelsior, Defiant and Norway, 2 Steamrunners and a single Intrepid class that would be leading the section. As the first shots were fired the sections quickly got into position. Each section would focus fire on a particular face of the cube, trying to disable cutting beam emitters and tractor beams. Beta section was tasked with attacking the left face. Immediately the belt erupted in explosions. The USS Three, a Miranda class in the Beta section had its shields broken and bridge boarded in the first five minutes of the engagement. The struggle could be heard through the comms station on the Avenger-B as it became increasingly one-sided. Soon the ship was completely taken over as the warp nacelles glowed a horrid green. The USS Three, now a Borg vessel slowly arced to face the Avenger head-on, The captain immediately ordered tactical to target the torpedo roll bar. The beam was fired only seconds later, crossing the expanse of space and narrowly missing floating debris only to violently smash directly into the ammunition bay of the roll bar. The torpedoes ignited in a chain reaction, engulfing the ship in a ball of fire.

The captain of the Intrepid knew how to play his ships to their best ability. Ordering the Steamrunners to stay at long range, focusing fire on weapon systems, he also commanded the Sabres and remaining Miranda to distract the cube to allow the heavy hitting Excelsior, Defiant, Norway and Akia to smash the cube. In preparation for the attack, the Avenger-B had deployed its vast amounts of fighters and bombers. The fighters would try to distract the cube while the bombers would hammer and area. The Admiral, still stuck in his old ways played to the Borgs largest advantage. The cube is most deadly when attacking large fleets from all over as its vast arrays of weapons have been strategically placed to cover every area of its frame. This was felt devastatingly throughout the fleet in under ten minutes of fighting one-third of the fleet had either been destroyed or assimilated. Ships were flying in all directions trying to avoid the cutting beams and staying out of the range of tractor beams. The Admirals ship, a New Orleans class, was heavily damaged the bridge crew of the Avenger-B watched as the ship slowly turned to face the Borg cube head on and use all available power to boost the engines. As the Avenger-B turned for another futile attack run the crew watched the impact, a small crater was left. All those lives lost to just leave a scratch on the surface, already the fleet could see the cube repairing itself. The fleet broke down into disarray, the bras had not prepared for such a situation.

The fleet was directionless and soon completely fell apart. Section Alpha suddenly disengaged, making a run for Sol Station. Communications were a mess as captains tried to make sense of the situation. Was it a retreat or a repositioning? Did they follow suit? Section Beta was now down to half its original fleet composition. The Avenger-B had lost its port side torpedo tubes after a devastating barrage of fire smashed through its shields. On the Bridge, the captain knew they had to re-group if they were to continue the fight. Ordering his helm officer to follow Alpha Section the Avenger-B disengaged. Immediately it was hailed by the Intrepid-class, the captain screaming at him to return back to the fight. The Avenger-B's captain tried to explain that it was the only way to win the fight, the Intrepid's captain closed comms. Things somehow looked even more desperate. The Bridge was solemn until the beeping of the helms man's console broke the silence. The rest of Beta Section was following the Avenger-B, excluding the Intrepid which was deploying its escape pods as the warp core detonated. Some of the unlucky pods that were too close where vaporised. The others were tractor beamed by the fleeing ships.

Soon the entire fleet was in full retreat.

The Borg Cube was in hot pursuit, a small fleet of assimilated vessels following the giant. The fleet was in bad shape, with half its compliment destroyed and the personnel losing all notion of victory, it would be safe to say that morale was at a critical low. The fleet had lost a majority of its command structure and was struggling to organise itself. There was nowhere left to run, they now stood defiantly on the edge of earth's gravitational pull, if they fell... earth and the rest of the Federation would follow suit. The Captain of the Avenger-B was slouched in his chair, almost certain he would never see his family again. Sighing he closed his eyes and braised his head with his hands. The bridge sparked with shouts, however. Cries and yelling. The Borg had come to finish them off, he knew it. But then he caught something the helm's man said. It couldn't be. Opening his eyes, almost leaning out of his chair he saw the flash of starships exiting warp. It was the armada from the Cardassian front! And they brought friends. A squad of 12 Galor starships exited warp along with several other vessels from the Klingon Defence Force. Several civilian ships had even joined the fleet, pledging to fight alongside Starfleet.

Name: AkiraLeft.jpg
Views: 692
Size: 48.1 KBSoon the USS Blazer took control of the situation. The USS Welshavenger and USS Sul joined the right flank with the newly constructed Avenger-B. Moral was at a high again. The fleet was only just ready when the Borg Cube became visible on the monitor. This time the fleet was going to concentrate all fire on a single face of the cube. Having the more nimble ships such as the Defiant and Sabre class act as distractions while the heavy hitting ships smashed at the defences. The carrier classes where ordered to stay back with the long-range vessels until they had deployed what remained of their fighter wing then move together to support the fleet.

The Avenger-B was given the task of tractor beaming any severely damaged vessels, bring them back to the rear and send a squad of repair drones. This way lives could be saves and ships could get back into action. The USS Baconators commander, captain Porkins (Star Wars anyone?) suggested that they do a relief tactic, have the majority of the fleet engaged but leave a small force behind, once ships started to run out of ammo or got too damaged they would be taken out of the line and replaced with a fresh crew and ship. The idea was adopted in part, the fleet couldn't afford ships sitting on the sideline but detailed some of the civilian vessels and Oberth classes to try and repair and resupply the vessels.

For a brief moment, just as the cube came into weapons range a quiet settled over the fleet. For a brief moment, nothing happened. Then, as the admiral ordered to fire the space between the fleets was punctured by hundreds of little red dots and thin orange streaks. The majority of assimilated vessels where almost instantly taken out and soon an overwhelming amount of firepower was concentrated on the weapon and shield systems of the cube. The fleet was slowly chipping away at the monsters health. The Borg Cube couldn't fight as effectively as it was designed to fight on all faces, concentrated fire on its part was its weakness... but still, ships fell.

five hours of intense fighting had passed, the front of the cube was hidden behind a dense field of debris. The Beast, however, had a chink in its armour. The fleet fired everything it had left at a gap in its defences, ships and bombers exhausted its supplies of torpedoes and used the last of there energy in their phasers. Two BoP's sung a glorious war cry as they went to ramming speed. The fire stopped on both sides. The cube lurched to one side as a green fireball smashed out of the corner of the top side, followed by more, increasing in violence and destruction. The fleet fell back as it finally exploded in a glorious and massive green fireball, engulfing the unlucky who were too close. They had done it however, they had won!

Thanks to all of you for reading through the final entry in the Anti-Borg task force line, this story was a long one for two reasons. The first being that I wanted to show you, in a fun action packed way how to fight the Borg and how not to fight the Borg. And also I wanted to really show you how ships work together in a good strategy.

Anyway, I do have some sad news, unfortunately, this will be the last scenario, instead, I will be doing a continuity breaking, epic sounding battle at the end of each month that pits the month's vessels against each other.

Speaking of which, what should next weeks ship be? Remember it can be any vessel from any time, faction or reality. Please leave your idea for next weeks ship in the comments section along with why you think it would be great to break it down.

Until next time,
Live Long and Prosper!

It's not too hard, I made a template for it in my head from your first one, now I just apply it to all the future ones! After that, it's a quick look over the words, incase of any glaring mistakes, but I'm not the most skilled reader! Just listen to the UFPAC Tongue Out

The Akira class starship is my favorite Star Trek ship as well. There's just something about the sleek design that feels so unique but different from all of the other Federation ships. I've picked up a number of pieces of information about this ship which I'm more than happy to share.

The Akira was designed to be the eventual successor/replacement (depends on the source) to the New Orleans, Excelsior, and Ambassador class starships. The ship began its original design phase during the Federation-Cardassian War, a series of conflicts between the Federation and the Cardassian Union, between 2347 and the mid 2360's. The ship relied far more heavily on torpedoes than phasers during combat, the first Federation ship to do so. There was a lot of opposition to constructing these ships because of its emphasis on combat (like the Defiant) but these concerns were dropped when the Borg threat emerged. This class began full production by prior to 2370.

The ship had multiple tractor beam emitters within the hangar to help guide auxiliary craft into the ship while landing. It also had one major tractor beam emitter in the aft section of the saucer, between the two rear hangar doors. While most auxiliary craft launched at the back, fighters would exit the ship at the front for rapid deployment and then return at the rear, which was relatively safer, during combat operations. When the ship docked all of its shuttles and fighters into "parking areas" alongside and below the main flight deck, additional auxiliary craft could be stored right on the flight deck. The torpedo launchers were of a rapid fire variety, meaning the ship could fire an almost continuous barrage of photon and quantum torpedoes at hostile starships.

Not long after we started the Ares Role Play, I realized I wanted to write a story about a made-up battle my character participated in while serving on an Akira class starship. Once I started drafting it, I began digging around for specifics on this starship because I wanted it to be as accurate as possible. I found some information through a number of starship reviews, a few books I own on Star Trek ships, and online searches. I ended up combining several sources I liked to create a clearer picture on the ship's specifications and service history.
Mon 25 Jun, 2018 1:19 AM
Hm... I might incorporate that into next weeks episode.

A service history section?

Anyway, what ship do you want to see next? Maybe something from another species or time period?

How about a few of the ships from the turn of the 24th century, such as the Constellation and Soyuz class ships.
Mon 25 Jun, 2018 1:36 AM
I think I'll do the Constellation as it will have much more lore than the Soyuz and will make for a more fleshed out article.

And whats your opinion on the 'Battle Royal' style substitute for the scenario?

I agree with you on the Constellation class since we had a chance to see it a lot more throughout TNG.

I've heard of 'Battle Royal' to describe several different things so what's the style you're thinking of? It sounds like you'll be doing something like this;

- Comparing two ships of either a similar time period or performed a similar duty and decide which one did the better job.
- Wargames between two different ships and determine a winner.
- Taking a look at one ship's strengths and weaknesses and decide how well it performed in its time.

Sounds like an interesting new scenario for this!
Mon 25 Jun, 2018 1:57 AM
The whole purpose of the scenarios was to show how this ship would operate in a situation but in a fun creative way. That took way to long though so I thought I might pit each month's ships against each other at the end of that months SFS.

There would be a playing field of some sort... say an asteroid belt or the rings around a planet. Each ship would start in a corner and then use tactics to defeat their opponents. It doesn't matter what timeline they are from, as long as the battle can clearly show how each ship operates and how a captain of one would act.

So I would say a Wargames situation.

Definitely one of my favorite ships as well. It kind of looks like the NX class, but a lot more "sleek". I remember playing the NX class instead of the starter ship long ago, but this time around I just used the starter ship. Even on a Science Officer toon, I always used Escorts so that I can equip more weapons.
Mon 25 Jun, 2018 4:41 AM
Yeah, it is also the ship I play most often.
Mon 25 Jun, 2018 10:56 AM
I loooove this ship! Great stuff in here. The Red Cloud is listed twice?

That's a lot of words :O

Great article, keep the great work up Smile Looking forward to more

Whoops, sorry about that, as you know with an article that large some mistakes get through the editing prosses.

What ship do you want next Scarlet and Arlu3n?

Holy Wowsers Kirk142! Well composed and written!

And on the question on what to feature next.. Well..

Since I am a TNG fan.. Galaxy Class! SmileLive Long and Prosper

I'm cool with whatever as these are great articles.

The team can save the Excelsior class for last because it's the best. You know, best for last kinda thing.

Galaxy-class ey, that's a great idea, I would have to also talk about the refit we see on the last episode of TNG because that thing is badass!

I'm okay with continuing doing 24th-25th-century ships but for next week I think I will go with the Constellation just to add some variety.

Maybe Miranda class? Would like to see that ship featured.
Tue 26 Jun, 2018 9:09 PM
I had been planning to do that for a while. Maybe next after the Constellation as part of another theme. Since all of the previous volumes had been part of the Anti-Borg task force maybe this next set could be the 23rd-24th-century new wave vessels.

Hows this roster sound:
