Saru in Discovery Short

An upcoming Star Trek Discovery short will look at the history of Commander Saru.

By Three of Seven Tue 04 Dec, 2018 5:31 PM
Saru, a member of a new race introduced into Star Trek history in Discovery (the Kelpien), will be getting an episode in a new series of shorts based around Star Trek Discovery. In total, there will be 4 stories based around the characters of the show, the one for Saru will be called "The Brightest Star", which aims to provide a bit more background on his character, and possibly tells us more about the Kelpien race, as we haven't had much background on them as yet, other than what we know from Saru himself.

There has already been a short for Tilly, which was episode one, and episode two features a new character called Craft.

As Netflix opted not to pick up the distribution rights for the Star Trek Short series, those outside of the America will not be able to see any of this content, as CBS All Access is limited to the US only, and CraveTV to Canada. Perhaps they will be released worldwide at a later date, but they will all be late to the party. The main thing will be to keep an eye out on Memory Alpha to find out more about the Kelpien, if such details are shared.

Is this the interview with Doug Jones himself (out of Saru-makeup)? I heard from a friend that THAT article is a fascinating read!

If it isn't, as a Saru-junkie, I'll devour your post anyhow!

Thank you for sharing!

ADDENDUM: ( WITH SPOILERS !!!!!!)

I watched this, upon recommendation (among 2 other s of the 4 total) and I found it full of heart, hope, and that yearning that we all have to "see what's around the next curve in the road."

The fact that Saru was the protagonist, well, only made that journey more special to me.

Remaining continuity questions: if, as was illustrated in Season 1 of Disco, Saru was able to travel at cheetah-esque speeds to "escape predators" --yet the predator in the short was an obelisk, immobile...as an idol demanding tribute... then, how did his kind develop said blinding overland speed & danger-flight traits? (Possible solution: other predatory species might exist upon Saru's world OTHER than the main antagonist shown.)

I could not -in good conscience- agreed MORE wholeheartedly with a statement other than yours, Jammers195.

Captain Saru...minus the "acting captain..."

It's all Doug Jones, man. It's something about the characters he plays, and the way he BECOMES them. He just doesn't jump into a role on a whim, either; you can tell he invests a GREAT deal of research into who or what he is playing, and gives it 110% every time he suits up.

Doug Jones, whether it be in Shape of Water, as Abe in Hellboy, or in Pan's Labyrinth... utterly remakes his physical presence, and some way (witchcraft or alien conspiracies, etc) he *becomes* other...and *otherworldly* !

CBS should hire stage 9 to make as many interactive computer simulations possible. They could even help with making an interactive Discovery site for the ships featured on the show.

Out of all of the shorts I thought his was the best.

Calypso being a very close second. I think we will see a Captain Saru eventually. Possibly Season Three.
