The Orville: Possible Season 3 Renewal?

Even though "The Orville" received mostly negative reviews for Season 1, it was renewed for another season. Is there a Season 3 on the horizon?

The Orville's first season didn't exactly go off as planned. Although most of the episodes were quite amusing, it didn't receive very positive reviews by critics according to Rotten Tomatoes. The Orville had 16 "Fresh" reviews and 36 "Rotten" reviews, with an average rating of 5.22 out of 10, which yields a 31% approval rating (by critics). Season 2, on the other hand, is faring much better. It's currently enjoying an approval rating of 100%, but it doesn't have as many critic reviews.

There are many factors that go into the decision to either renew a show, or cancel it. Some shows are cancelled in the middle of a run, but that isn't very common. As far as ratings go, season 2 currently has (as of the publishing date of this article - 12th April 2019) an average viewership of 3.27 million, while season 1 had an average viewership of 4.33 million. Although it doesn't seem like much, viewership seems to have been on the decline since the series premiere. Not all is lost, however!

The State of California has granted a tax credit to eight prime-time TV series for renewal, and The Orville is part of that deal.

"[T]he California Film Commission announced nine series that will receive a tax credit for filming in the state. Among them was the third season of The Orville, set to receive $15.8 million in credit.

"FOX confirmed to that The Orville hasn't been renewed for a third season yet, but that the tax credit will apply if the series is renewed."
Only time will tell if the series is renewed for a third season, but time is running out. The Orville's final three episodes of the season will air every Thursday starting on April 11th.

Do you watch The Orville? What do you think about the series? Should it be renewed for a third season? Let us know in the comments below.

Nice, balanced, objective and fair review. Well done, to both the author, and the editor.

I watch it and would continue to do so. At first I was ver annoyed at the attempt to be a comedy and a serious show a the same time, but in the second season it appears they have found a balance that makes it work.

I'll be severely disappointed if The Orville isn't renewed for a third season. If it isn't I think it will be probably Disney's doing. Supposedly there is already The Orville comic books & I had ready where action figures were planned for later this year. I still get more of an original ST vibe from The Orville compared to Discovery, but that is probably jsut me. Discovery season 2 was better than 1, imo, & I'm glad it is coming back, but that ending was didn't give me a nice concluding feeling & seemed to reach everywhere.

Orville feels better then Star Trek Discovery for me. Hope it gets a second series.

Nice review btw.
