Star Wars: The Mandalorian coming November!

Disney’s first small screen Star Wars spin-off will be landing in November.

Star Wars fans have been left wanting a live-action television series for a long time now, but the wait will finally come to an end on 12th November 2019 with the hotly anticipated release in the US of “The Mandalorian”. The premier is due to air on the new Disney streaming service “Disney+”. Those of us outside the US are still waiting to hear how (and when) we’ll be able to see the show; we may get Disney+ in its own right, our current Disney streaming service “DisneyLife” may become Disney+, or (least likely) it may be released on another streaming service (such as Netflix or Amazon Prime).

Jon Favreau (well known for his presence in that other Disney powerhouse the Marvel Cinematic Universe) serves as creator, head writer, showrunner, and co-executive producer, alongside Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. There will be eight episodes in the first season and they will be released weekly with episode two scheduled to hit the airwaves on 19th November. With a rumoured budget of $10 million per episode, Disney certainly isn’t kidding around with this new venture for the franchise.

Premise

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. “The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire, about five years after the events of “Return of the Jedi”, and before the emergence of the First Order, as depicted in “The Force Awakens”. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic.

Confirmed Cast

  • Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Narcos) as the titular Mandalorian; Pascal has said that the character he plays is “Clint Eastwood-esque” with advance combat skills and a questionable moral character.

  • Retired wrestler and mixed martial artist Gina Carano (Fast & Furious 6, Deadpool) as Cara Dune, a former Rebel Shock Trooper-turned-mercenary who fought in the civil war for the Rebellion.

  • Hollywood giant Nick Nolte in an as-yet-unannounced role.

  • Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) as Moff Gideon, a former governor under the Empire whose life changed after the Rebels destroyed the second Death Star.

  • Another Hollywood heavyweight to join the cast is Carl Weathers as Greef Carga, the leader of a bounty hunter guild who hires the Mandalorian to track a valuable asset.

  • Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) as the voice of IG-11, an innocent, naive droid who does not know sarcasm or how to lie. He was initially rumoured to be playing the infamous bounty hunting droid IG-88, but it has since been confirmed to be this new character instead. Waititi has been quoted as saying his character is “like a child with a gun”.

Other cast members of note include Emily Swallow, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, Bill Burr, Mark Boone Junior, Ming-Na Wen, Natalia Tena and Julia Jones.

Finally

While The Mandalorian will be the first live-action Star Wars show to hit our screens, it is not the only one in the works. Disney is also working on a Rogue One spin-off series starring Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk, due to hit our screens sometime in 2020. Ewan McGregor also announced at D23 that he will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in yet another spin-off series based on his character which is due to start filming next year. There is also a final, 12 episode, series of the animated The Clone Wars to look forward to. With the continuation of the Skywalker Saga receiving a lukewarm reception from some fans, Disney appears to be attempting to take the franchise in new directions. As an [almost] lifelong fan (I went to see A New Hope at the cinema in January 1978!) I for one can’t wait to see this!

I like some of the recents star wars movies, even under direction of Disney. I really liked star wars Rogue One, but, even if I'm intrigued in this new movie, I'm not sure if a Bounty Hunter themed character/story would be appreciated by the large mass. Will see, but I'm sure intrigued about this one!!

Great article Saelanna! Just what I need, another streaming service to pay for Sad. But I would just to give the show a chance and if it's bantha fodder, then I'll dump Disney+ faster than you can draw a lightsaber lol
