Nvidia's New RTX 3060

Nvidia launches the RTX 3060, and it might surprise you.

Graphics card brand Nvidia has announced a release date for the upcoming Geforce RTX 3060. The AMP graphics card is scheduled to go on sale February 25, 2021.

This model will be the first desktop GPU based on the GA106-300-A1 chip, and brings with it something of an anomaly in the manufacturer's lineup.

Instead of the 8 GB video memory standard on the more expensive and assumedly more powerful RTX 3060 Ti, the RTX 3060 brings 12 GB to the table giving it more memory than even the much more expensive RTX 3080.

Only blocks of 6 or 12 GB memory fit on the 192-bit wide memory interface of the RTX 3060 and since 6 GB is simply not an option for current generations, Nvidia has opted for the 12 GB variant, even on the more economical card.

In a brief performance analysis based on the technical specs of the RTX 3060, the graphics card should be roughly in the range of a Geforce RTX 2080. While the 12 GB memory, especially helpful when loading large textures and native resolutions in 4K or 8K, is a nice perk, it should see more use in the immediate future as programmers incorporate this requirement more and more into the mainstream.

With a 170 watt power budget The RTX 3060 will probably be even more energy-efficient than the $484 (400€) RTX 3060 Ti with 200 watts. It is also likely that board partners will offer more compact versions for HTPCs or other compact computers.

The Geforce RTX 3060 is expected to cost $387 (320€), however, both the release date and the purchase price do not seem very realistic in the current supply situation. Although there will certainly be some copies at the beginning, they will most likely be sold out quickly and with this tight availability, the prices will rise significantly, as has been seen with all previous Ampere graphics cards and AMD's RDNA2 GPUs.

Do you plan on getting the new 3060? Do you already have one 30xx series graphics cards? Let us know in the comment section below.

Nice article Emmy!

The price is indeed interesting, I think I'll buy a 3060 ... as soon as I have enough savings AND my main PC back from Germany lol

Intriguing, close to 2080 in performance? I eagerly await the reviews for it to see if this is true, another excellent article.

Those specs are pretty nutty, but I have to question Nvidia's plan here. Why are are they trying to outdo the 3060ti? Typically the TI variants have been the "unlocked" version of team green cards? My head hurts xD

Still if it holds up to that spec, I'll be impressed! Excellent article Emmy Big Grin

Nvidia should get production of their current cards up to snuff before taunting customers with new ones. AMD too.

A really good article Emmy, I'm surprised to hear this has more memory than their more expensive cards.
