On Star Trek Day last year, September 20, 2020, Executive Producer Henry Alonso Myers told his audience, “We’re gonna tell big ideas, science fiction adventures, in episodic mode, so we have room to kind of meet new aliens, see new ships, visit new cultures.”

He was speaking of course, about the official announcement of putting together a writing team for Kurtzman and Co.’s then newest project, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This new series would revolve around the character of Christopher Pike, first introduced to fans in Star Trek: The Original Series, and the years he commanded the Enterprise before James Kirk.

Yesterday a video was released announcing that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is officially in production and has added five more cast members. Delivering the message were the series' principal leads, Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck, joined by new series' regulars Christina Chong, Jess Bush, Babs Olusanmokun, Celia Rose Gooding, and Melissa Navia. You can see the video below.

Pike’s character had been re-reintroduced to the franchise during the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. Like the well-received iteration played by Bruce Greenwood in the JJ Abrams ‘Kelvin Timeline’ movies, Anson Mount’s portrayal won over legions of fans, and both Twitter and Google both reported ‘Captain Pike’ trending after his first appearance in Discovery’s season two premier ‘Brother’, in January 2019.

Akiva Goldsman, co-showrunner shared, “In a career, there is never enough work that is pure joy. I feel that my friend Alex Kurtzman along with David Stapf at CBS Studios and Julie McNamara at Paramount+ have given me just that by letting me haunt the stock rooms of my favorite candy store and I am grateful. With a hell of a cast and undying love for the original series, we boldly go.”

Along with Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers will serve as co-showrunners with Goldsman both writing and directing the first episode. Kurtzman, Goldsman, and Jenny Lumet will serve as executive producers, with Heather Kadin, Akela Cooper, John Weber, Trever Roth, Frank Siracusa, Alonso Myers, Aaron Baiers, Davy Perez, and Rod Roddenberry serving as co-executive producers. The series will be produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Alonso Myers sounded as excited as the fans to see production finally begin. “I’m incredibly grateful to be working alongside Akiva and our brilliant, multi-faceted cast to help bring the adventures of the Starship Enterprise to new life,” said Myers. “For someone who’s been dreaming of spaceships and alien worlds since I was little, this show is a dream come true.”

I am more excited about this show than I have been about any Star Trek production in years. I cannot wait.

I must admit, I am eager to see this unexplored period of trek, especially if we see new ship designs, TOS era Miranda maybe?
