Prince Philip – Her Majesty’s King

Prince Philip, Consort of the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II., is dead. Buckingham Palace reported he “passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle on April 9, 2021.“ He was 99 years old.

The Duke of Edinburgh had a heart surgery at a specialized clinic in February where he had to stay for several weeks. He was sent home in March prepared to celebrate his 100th birthday on June 10th. Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II. married in 1947 making him the Consort of the British monarch, after her coronation in 1953, and was the Queen’s main support.RoyalWedding

The “Duke of Hazard”? That’s what he was called by the British, not only in a lovely way, but also with a little bit of mockery. He worked hard for this “title”. With his black and very British sense of humour he was able to make lots of people laugh, including international and diplomatic hosts or guests. Once he addressed the former German chancellor Helmut Kohl as “Herr Reichskanzler” and commented on the national dress of Nigeria’s president with the words, “You look like as if you want to go to bed soon”.

So maybe he wasn’t blessed with the heart of a true diplomat, but he had been the Queen’s most important and essential supporter for more than seven decades. Once he was asked about the recipe for such a long relationship and the Prince answered: “The secret of a happy marriage is to have different interests – and keep them!”

One of these passions, which the Duke claimed for himself, was flying. He received his license after his training with the Royal Air Force and with his last flight in 1997 he was able to reach almost 6,000 flight hours. Nevertheless, his military heart wasn’t beating for the Air Force, but for the Royal Navy.QueenandPrincePhillip

Prince Philip was born on June 10th, 1921, as Philippos Andreou of Greece and Denmark on the Greek island of Corfu. He was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. On the paternal side he came from House Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg.

The Duke’s childhood was shaped by many conflicts within his family. His parents broke up early and Philip went the France together with his mother Alice. After her continuing mental condition had got worse, he was forced to grow up in boarding schools in Germany, France and Great Britain. In the UK he went to the Royal Navy College in Dartmouth and was ordered to serve on the HMS Ramillies when he was 18. During World War II Philip served as a Navy officer aboard several warships, reached the rank of Lieutenant, and was awarded numerous medals such as the Greek War Cross. In 1951 he stepped down from active sea duty.

He met the later Queen during his military training in 1939 for the very first time while she, aged 13, was visiting the Royal Navy College. She is said to have lost her heart immediately to the young and charming Greek prince. After receiving his British citizenship in 1947 Philip changed his name into “Mountbatten”, the English translation of his mother’s German birth name and gave up his title “Prince of Greek and Denmark”. He married Elizabeth in Westminster Abbey on November 20th, 1947.

The former military commander became an inconspicuous Consort of the British monarch after the Queen’s coronation in 1953, and thus submitted to the strict Royal protocol. Four children emerged from the marriage. Prince Charles was born in 1948, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward followed in 1950, 1960 and 1964.

Even in old age, the Duke of Edinburgh kept many appointments. It was not until his 90th birthday in 2011 that he announced that he wanted to cut things back a little in the future because he was slowly approaching his "expiration date". At the beginning of May 2017, Buckingham Palace finally announced that Prince Philip would withdraw from all obligations and would no longer appear in public.

The prince died two months before his 100th birthday.
