If you’ve ever wanted to have all of the equipment to look like a landing party from the original series, your wait will be over soon.

The Wand Company who’ve brought us such props as the Bluetooth Communicator and the Remote Phaser, are in the process of working on their next creation, which will let anyone feel like Mr Spock. Indeed, they’re working on a functional tricorder which will be available for general purchase.

This has been something that they’ve had in the works for some time and they are releasing regular updates as to how this is currently progressing. WandCompanyScan

They went to the trouble of finding one of the hero props which still exists, and laser scanned it so their replica will be true to what you saw on screen. They’re planning to have it “Measure the environment, scan radio frequencies, record audio” to impress your friends.
It’ll also have the data discs which you saw on the original item as well.

So far they’ve shown off the CAD designs for the prop along with some of the tooling which they’re putting in place to be able to manufacture the product.

For the Data Discs, their plan is to have 8 of them in the product, with each one fulfilling a specific role e.g. a catalogue of captains logs, Enterprise status and an EM Field sensor and FM radio scanner. WandCoCommunicator

It’ll also have a functioning screen which will let you see some of the information that is being picked up by the sensors along with the snazzy Moiré pattern which you also saw on the communicator.

Having personally used the Communicator itself, it’s a well put together and fascinating piece of equipment and it does leave you feeling like you could be part of the show. The company has a track history of making high end products so it’ll be interesting to see the final article.

Right now, they’re expecting this to retail for £250/$250 and they’re hoping to have it available for pre-sale during 2021.
You can register your interest in the product here and you’ll also get their newsletters as they're released.

£250 to stand around and say "I'm detecting high levels of EM radiation" or tune into FM which is being phased out. Nonetheless it's interesting, but something I wouldn't spend money on.

I got the Communicator as an Xmas gift a couple of years ago, I've not had much of a chance to use it (don't fancy taking it out due to Covid) but it's pretty good. I'll probably drop the cash for this one too.

I've always been fascinated by the tricorder from every series. It's my favorite piece of tech that the franchise as introduced (that our current technology could reasonable build).
