GTA Remastered Trilogy: Rumour or Fact?

A discussion about the recent “leaks” on the remastered trilogy

Over the past few years, in addition to the normal release of new titles, we’ve been seeing a growing number being remastered and sold as new games. Some great examples of these include Alex the Kidd (Originally Sega Master System), the Mass Effect Trilogy and the original Command and Conquers.

There has been a lot of interest in older games being re-released as these remasters as it’s becoming harder to get some games to work on modern hardware on PC and consoles. They just don’t support backwards compatibility as much as they used too.

One of the biggest requests has been the trilogy of GTA games which made up the “3D” universe back in the early to mid-nineties. These are considered by some to be some of the best GTA games even when compared to the more recent GTA V and IV.

Kotaku recently let the world know they’d received leaked news that these games were getting a full remaster but made in the Unreal engine which would substantially improve their graphics as even with some rose-tinted glasses, they are looking quite dated now, especially GTA3 and Vice City.

It’s said that the graphics will be using a mix of the old and the new as Rockstar doesn't want to change the original titles too much from what was originally on the PS2 and it’s rumoured that Rockstar Dundee may be working on these as they have some experience with this.

Right now, Rockstar themselves haven’t put out any official announcement regarding these remasters, but their recent actions do suggest they have something coming as they put out a DCMA takedown on a number of mods which were designed to “remaster” these older games of a sort. At the time of writing, these mods wouldn’t have an effect on Rockstar's revenue streams as these games are so old, it does lead you to wonder what may be coming.

Rockstar also announced that for the 20th anniversary of GTA 3’s release, there will be something special coming which, while mentioning GTA Online, could mean there is something else in the pipeline.

As there is no official confirmation, we don’t have a release date but the rumours are that it could be late this year but more recent news has suggested possibly the next. Both are plausible as Rockstar is releasing the “new” version of GTA V for the next gen console platforms in November so they may want to avoid clashing with that.

Once there’s more news, your Federation News Service will keep you up to date.

What do you think about these leaks? Would you be willing to buy remastered versions of these older games? Do you think remasters are going too far now? Let us know in the comments below.

Yes please!

San Andreas and Vice City are still my favourite of the game series. I hope we get a remaster!
Vice City was the first GTA game I ever played at a mates house. My Mum was fuming when she found out xD

As much as I enjoyed Vice City and waited for the Xbox remaster before playing it (never had a Playstation back in the day), the original Grand Theft Auto is where I started, it currently resides in the attic. While it may lack the polish of the later 3D titles, the original soundtrack on it was incredible.

To be honest, I enjoy the Red Dead series much more compared to GTA series, I would love to see a Red Dead Redemption remaster for consoles and perhaps even PC, it would be very nice, nevertheless a GTA series remaster is also very promising and interesting.
