GOG and Classic Star Trek Games

There have been rumours that classic Star Trek games might be getting a refresh on GOG

By Three of Seven Sat 28 Aug, 2021 3:53 PM
Recently, a rumour has been floating around regarding a number of classic Star Trek titles, and the website GOG, who give old games a new lease of life, allowing them to run on newer computers. This came about after a user on GameFront, who wrote about this, discovered that a number of Star Trek titles had their artwork, and information updated on the GOG Galaxy store pages.

attachment.php?attachmentid=15693 Not only has the artwork on the pages been updated, but if you click on the image to the right with box art, and look at the bottom right corner, you will see that the copyright has also been updated. As pointed out by Game Front, where this image is sourced from, "the (Star Trek) franchise was still wholly owned under Paramount back when these games were originally released", the year has also been updated to 2021.

However, it is worth taking rumours like this with a heavy pinch of salt, and not getting your hopes up too much, as it could just have been a cosmetic update to the game pages, since GOG Galaxy can put a number of your installed games all in one place.

With no official news from GOG at the time of writing, we can only cross our fingers, and hope to see classic titles like Bridge Commander, Elite Force, and Armarda return to being easily accessible, perhaps even with some updated internet connectivity, allowing for simple multiplayer to get going. We will no doubt update you all if this news does turn out to be true, so stay tuned, and as I often do, we shall finish with a simple question.

What classic games would you look forward to playing?

I have to admit, I'd be hoping for this to come to more than just some updated art. They are some of the best Trek games about and I'd love the chance to purchase them digitally

Bridge Commander for sure, but still would love to see Birth of the Federation and Final Unity to be given same treatment

I'd love to play Star Trek Fleet Command series again. Though I imagine it wouldn't feel as high quality as it did to me back then.

I would drop an unreasonable amount of money to have drm free copies of all of these games.

I would throw all the money at them for updated versions to work on newer systems

To be fair alot of these games can be aquired and made to work through various legel and non-legal means. I 'downloaded' a copy of 'A Final Unity' and once o got it working with dosbox bought a copy of the game disc online (i still had my original box from years ago).

Until these people sort out licences for these games so we can rebuy them properly abandonware sites are the way to go

Well, with the updated copyright that is on the images, it is looking like the licences have been sorted out. The thing is, some people don't have the knowladge to get the old games working, this is why GOG is so useful, and usually the cost isn't too high, so it'll open up these old games to new people, or returning players.

It was be a blessing to see such classic favs have yet again a fresh breathe of life once more!

The main problem with BOTF is the memory leak in the game. At some point it takes ages for it to process a turn

Stellaris does something similar, when you reach a certain year it starts to give up the ghost a bit.

I'd like to take another crack at Judgement Rites. I remember playing it way back in the day but the version I had, which I think was the White Label budget release and is still here somewhere didn't have the cast voices.

Oh my.... oh my.... yes please!

Some of the games certainly need to have the gog treatment and become available. But some games need a bit more. A Remaster of the somewhat older games and some even a complete rebuild is needed for them to re-appeal to me.
Birth of the Federation is a no brainer in any case. I'd pick that up in pre-order, even though i am principally against pre-ordering. Big Grin

I know there used to be a fan project for a BOTF2, I believe it's called Supremacy and may still be in beta

My favorite trek classic game is Star Trek: Judgement Rites.

I forgot about that project. It looks like the dev is still maintaining it so I'll have to give it a go.

I gave them a quick jaunt on my Windows 11 machine last night, and they worked beautifully.

Sadly, I get to the Main Menu of A1 but can't actually play - seems to crash whenever I try and start a mission or an Instant Action Sad

Yeah I figured it out in the end - just needed to load the DirectX settings and set Display Mode to Set By Application - I think there is a clash between my display settings and what Armada could cope with Tongue Out
