Sheffield Anime & Gaming Con 2021

A welcoming experience at the heart of Sheffield

This time last weekend, I was out at the Mercure hotel in Sheffield for the Anime & Gaming convention hosted by Anime League. Another convention which had returned after the wave of cancellations due to COVID, and it’s fair to say, a lot of people were happy about this return, it’s also not very often you see people dressed up in cosplay in the city centre of Sheffield!

Getting to the convention was super easy, as it’s central, which means access to the busses, the train, and the tram, there is also plenty of parking in the area. There is also a fairly extensive set of rules for exhibitors on selling, surrounding things such as the value/contents of mystery bags, and the selling of bootleg/unlicensed products, this gives those visiting an extra layer of confidence in the things on sale.

In to the experience of the convention itself, it was small, but it didn’t feel small, there was a lot of energy in their air, and the sound of people enjoying themselves. There were also plenty of events on, such as Jackbox on the main stage, gaming rooms, with a fair bit of retro gaming as well, and there were some familiar faces from MCM London in the artist area of the event.

Yorkshire & Humber Regional Cyber Crime Unit also had representation at the convention, talking to people about online safety, having a number of booklets to help educate, each with different aims, such as one being for parents to teach their children, with a helpful glossary at the back.

Overall, the convention was in a great location, friendly staff, and a welcoming atmosphere, they also host a wide range of conventions around Britain, so there’s a chance there will be one accessible to most people in the UK. The 2022 dates have been posted on their website, so you can take a look to see if any interest you, and put them into your diary!

Have you been to a convention this year? Share your experience below.
