This Tuesday JJ Abrams announced that they would begin shooting the fourth feature film staring the ‘original cast’ including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

Speaking to Variety, Abrams said, “We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you’ve just never seen before.” JJAbrams

Over the past several years, there has been plenty of speculation on if and when Chris Pine and the team would retake their stations aboard the Enterprise, in what had been called by many, the potential Star Trek 4.

There was some thought that a whole new crew might be brought in with storylines involving the familiar characters fans had come to know and love being floated around, as well as some ideas centering around a spate of new characters ushering in a new ‘franchise’ within a franchise. Possible directions the project might have taken included Quentin Tarantino running into a Eugene Roddenberry sized brick wall petitioning for his take on a gangster themed feature based on The Original Series episode “A Piece Of The Action”. Noah Hawley had his own take on where he thought the future of the series lie, but delays and possible chaos behind the scenes at Paramount contributed to him moving on to other projects.

ViacomCBS, now Paramount Global as of Tuesday, has given no indication as to what we might expect to see played out in the new feature. There had been reports of a script involving Chris Hemsworth back in his role as Captain Kirk’s father George S Kirk, avoiding his inevitable tragedy. While rumors had persisted that salary negotiations between Pine and Hemsworth had derailed these plans previously, the momentum behind a project like this could be enough to smooth things out.

While everything is rumor until we hear it confirmed by someone involved with the project, this is the news many fans have been waiting to hear. The Kelvin Timeline is what current cinematic Trek is. To a whole generation of fans, these are the movies they grew up with, and this is the crew that pops in their heads when someone mentions Star Trek.

Whatever crew first pops into your head, or whatever starship you see yourself Captain’ing in glorious battle, advancing the Kelvin Timeline is good for Trek, and good for the fans.

Even if a Voyager movie would be better.

Despite the various complaints about the newer movies they were all impressive films visually and has some very good portrayals of the TOS crew.
I think another film will be entertaining and I certainly enjoyed the others despite their flaws.

And remember; were it not for ST:09 I doubt we’d have the resurgence of Trek content we have now, including the very existence of STO that many of us enjoy.

I like JJtrek. If they follow the pattern, the next Trek should get us to San Francisco in the mid-'80s, right? ST4: The Voyage Home was the second best TOS movie (ST2: TWoK is #1, of course), and a Kelvin update could be interesting. Simon Pegg talking to a computer mouse? Yes please. There will be much rending of clothes and gnashing of teeth no matter what story they come up with, so they should just go for the gold. Be fearless. But PLEASE Do not Kelvinize ST5: The Final Frontier!

And if we could get some nifty new Kelvin ships out of it? Even better.

The 3rd has to be my favorite of the Kelvin Films, but like Taku said, more new Kelvin Ships makes me Giddy, Kelvin Miranda and Excelsior? Dance

The statement "advancing the Kelvin Timeline is good for Trek, and good for the fans" is basically accepting a low standard. People nowadays don't appreciate the good character writing in the 80's. If I compare now and then, female characters we much more powerful in TNG. Femine, yet strong. And not everyone is a winner, whihc ios part of life. I'd rather have JJ stay away from Star trek; he doesn't care nor does he respect the source material.

I was with you until the last line. In no timeline would a Voyager movie be better! 😇😎🥸

The Kelvin timeline was an interesting idea, but I think the execution of it in the first 2 films was rather hit and miss. Leaving aside the new concepts, ships, the visual appeal and whatnot, Star Trek tying itself back into the Prime timeline to show how it came to be was a good choice to build off what came before, but I felt the film was otherwise a bit dull and lifeless. Star Trek Into Darkness, while not bad, was a bit of a misstep as it being essentially a rehash of Wrath of Khan meant the new universe was avoiding standing on its own feet, which is what it needed.

Star Trek Beyond got it right - it stood on its own (though you could argue it still lifted a few elements from the original films), it felt the most like TOS vibe we knew as it had the flavour of the original episodes with a few easter eggs thrown in (such as Scotty mentioning about a forcefield in the shape of a giant green hand) and had the advantage of it being the 50th anniversary... but then Paramount botched the handling of the film by releasing it in the crowded summer market instead of holding off for an extra few weeks and taking advantage of the anniversary date.

The Kelvin timeline has legs and while it can relate and reference its heritage, they need to keep the Beyond frame of mind and let it do its own thing instead of copying what came before.
