The Orville – New Horizons

Fans of the popular science-fiction show have been waiting for this moment for three long years. The US streaming service HULU will started showing season 3 of “The Orville” on June 2nd, 2022.

It’s been a while since fans had the opportunity to watch a new season of this show that is known to be inspired by Star Trek, but with its own unique flair and of course, sense of (partly black) humour. TheOrvilleSeason3

The first two seasons were shown on FOX from 2017 – 2019, and season three, consisting of 10 episodes, will have the title “The Orville – New Horizons”. It can be streamed on already mentioned HULU in the United States.

In Europe, e.g. in Germany, owners of a Disney+ subscription will have the opportunity to watch the new adventures of Captain Mercer and his crew, however, it is still not known when this will be available to stream as an exact date has not been published yet.

What is “The Orville”?

In case you don’t know the show at all, “The Orville” is a tribute to the science-fiction legend “Star Trek” that quickly develops its own identity as a comedy show, albeit the setting, as well as costumes and technology are quite similar and comparable.

The show is set in the 25th century. Humanity has developed into the future and interstellar voyages have become possible. The planet Earth is part of a peace union with several other planets and species.MarkJackson

Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) is the commanding officer of the USS Orville, but stupidly his ex-wife Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki) was sent to the ship as Mercer’s XO. What is more, the ship’s crew seems to be a wild and chaotic bunch of people so lots of interpersonal turbulences are somewhat inevitable.

The whole crew of the Orville melts together quite quickly. Becoming a cohesive unit and group of friends, they go on to share several adventures together – some of them being serious, the most of them being very funny.

Whilst the episodes of seasons 1 and 2 used to have an average length of 45 minutes this will be extended up to 60 minutes in season 3. This is good news for every fan of the show!

Are you looking forward to meeting the Orville’s crew again? Are you willing to “Open this jar of pickles for the Captain?” Please let us know in the comments below!

This show reminds me of Star-Trek thats not Star-Trek intentional or? I know it's from the creator of FarScape but it looks very Trekky to me except it isn't is it off-brand Trek? Am i wrong? Smile

It is absolutely intentional. It is known how big a fan MacFarland is of Star Trek, and he has worked with the TNG cast and Patrick Stewart specifically multiple times. I believe I read that some of the TNG set designers were brought in to bring everything to life.

The Orville launched about the same time as Star Trek: Discovery, but unlike Disco it was launched on network TV originally here in the US instead of the then new and very limited CBS All-Access (now Paramount+) streaming paywall. It was nice to have that free alternative show that was spiritually along the same lines as Star Trek even though it was separate and distinct from Trek canon (and at the time a bit cruder but "nu trek" seems to be embracing that a bit too). Now that The Orville is also on streaming it will be interesting to see how it compares, but at least the first episode of the new season was a nice start after a long hiatus for the show.
