San Diego Comic Con beams up a shuttle load of Star Trek news

San Diego Comic wrapped up recently and Star Trek had plenty of news to share over the long weekend.

Alongside the news from the panels, we also got 2 trailers for Lower Decks Season 5 and the long Trek Section 31, plus a clip from Strange New Worlds Season 3.

Star Trek Lower Decks

Star Trek Lower Decks Season 5 is being called the final season and it has been announced will arrive October 24th this year. Continuing on the theme from the past few seasons of calling back to the TOS Movies, this season is calling back to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. With the first 50 seconds being an almost complete match of the trailer for Star Trek VI. However, it seems there is hope for the return of the Lower Decks cast as Beckett Mariner says, “We aren't done voyaging”.

The rest of the trailer follows our 5 Lower Deckers with interactions with Klingons, other Orion’s (you may remember Tendi left for Orion at the end of Season 4), the return of the Decon Chamber and Decon Gel as seen in Star Trek Enterprise, and may other excerpts from their mission across season 5. It looks to be another great and very funny season ahead and this writer is hoping it won’t be the end for this crew or style of show, we all need a good laugh sometimes. (Hey Mike McMahan, Middle Decks is right there!)

Star Trek Section 31

Star Trek Section 31 also got a trailer. Being the return of Star Trek movies it’s something that has been hotly anticipated. Starring Oscar Michelle Yeoh in her role of Phillipa Georgiou, Terran Empress, Section 31 Agent and at this point prolific time traveller. Having been sent back in time by Carl or the Guardian of Forever, the Section 31 long trek follows her exploits in the ‘Lost Era’ (Early 24th century) and will even feature the younger version of the Captain of the Enterprise-C, Captain Rachel Garett, as seen in the TNG episode Yesterday's Enterprise.

The trailer starts with a warning by the Starfleet Command Media Division for misfit content labelling colourful metaphors, disintegration, Deltan fraternization and reference to unauthorised time jumps as the causes. It then starts where this writer would guess is when Georgiou becomes the Emperor of the Terran Empire, before moving to a club with some very exciting outfits from what seem to be our main cast, before Georgiou mocks the idea that no-one is going to commit murder. It seems the sassy nature of the character seen in Discovery has not been lost in this adaptation to the Long Trek. We also some beautiful fight and ship scenes.

I am now very excited for this to come out, but we have yet to get a confirmed date just ‘Coming Soon’ so in this writer’s opinion we can expect to see it before next years San Diego Comic Con.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The clip from Strange New Worlds Season 3 is 5 minutes long and taken from an episode showing multiple members of the crew becoming Vulcans for some away mission. While Chief Engineer Pelia is unaffected, Captain Pike, Lt Soong, Ens Uhura, and Nurse Chapel are all transformed into full Vulcans. Following this we get a very quick away mission with the team of 5 Vulcans (sorry 4 and one half-Vulcan). It turns out the 4 temporary Vulcans are unable to change back, leading to an episode I am sure will encompass most of the crew trying to help them revert back to their original species. The 4 perhaps try to see how their new abilities might be able to help them out, as Uhura mentions she wishes she could use her abilities more right before finding out they can’t change back.

Whilst I am getting hung up on exactly how this would work, it has been explained before that Vulcan emotions are stronger than human (and we do see this in this clip for a brief second). The repression and focus on logic is a cultural safety feature of the Vulcans to ensure they do not devolve into savagery, similar to what was experienced before Surak’s teachings were adopted. However, whilst we see an entire biological change with the use of a Hypospray, we also see a cultural change in the 4 crew members to match the average Vulcan, including their xenophobia at Spock’s half Vulcan-half Human heritage. I am hoping that this attachment to the lore (which is often said to be a bit wibbly-wobbly by the writers anyway) will not spoil people's enjoyment of the episode.

News from the panel

While most of the big news came out the teasers and trailers there were still plenty of news from the Star Trek panel. Starting out, Star Trek Academy has had some more casting news, Mary Wiseman reprising Lt Sylvia Tilly and Oded Fehr as Admiral Charles Vance will be coming back as supporting characters, and Tig Notaro playing Commander Jett Reno and Robert Picardo as the Emergency Medical Hologram. Wiseman coming back for Academy has been assumed to be the case, but it is nice to see it confirmed. The EMH is a surprise return but one I am sure longtime fans will be glad to see.

Tawny Newsome who is probably better known to most of you as the voice actress for Beckett Mariner also announced she is leading a new live action 25th century show. We don’t have any more details, but we can be sure there will be some comedy elements involved with Newsome at the lead.
