US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has died at the age of 82, US media report.

Earlier this month he had surgery to relieve blocked coronary arteries.

He set foot on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind".

Armstrong, along with three other astronauts, received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award, last November.

He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. He and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon.

A quote once written by the fabulous Gene Roddenberry, which means so much in such a short sentence. Space is where Neil Armstrong and the crew Apollo became American Heroes. Where One Small Step for Man, and One Giant Step for Mankind was Taken.

The important achievement of any missions into space are demonstrating that humanity is not forever chained to this planet and our visions go rather further than that and our opportunities are unlimited. Where we explore and seek out new planets and generations (Mars, or even to the Moon) Leaving behind immortal footprints for future generations to hopefully follow behind. Today, We Remember a wonderful man. Who was the first man on the moon, with the Apollo Mission.

Today, we remember that Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon took those brave steps, and remember the American hero he was. So when you think about science and exploration, remember that mission to the moon, and remember to look towards the future and what a wonderful thing space exploration is and just how far NASA has come.

While I am a follower of the "First Moonlanding was filmed on Earth" conspiracy theory ... It's still a sad day to see such an idol of the American, and even the entire Western world be taken from us.

RIP Neil, You were a Man that has and will inspire countless billions we have not and will not look at a heavenly bodies as we did before your iconic first step, but in the end you were just a Man with family and friends that you loved and loved you back. My thoughts and prayers go out to your loved ones in this time.
While you will never be there to take that first step again, I am sure in some small way you will be with us as we take future steps into history.

It seems hard to believe 43 years have passed since those words were spoken on a celestial body other than our own, and now the first person to take that step onto the moon has left us. It is a sad time indeed.

However, there was a lot to the story of Neil Armstrong, and I highly recommend reading about him. There were reasons he was picked to be the commander of that flight: his control under downright frightening circumstances, like ejecting from a lunar landing simulator that tumbled end over end, bitting his tongue and going back to work that afternoon, to his incredible sense of humility. The man walked on the moon and then, basically, came home to teach engineering to the next generation.

There is a lot to learn there, for everyone.
