SO here's the thing.
I have an iMac (gonna ignore the haters out there - this is my first one, loving it so far). I use bootcamp and Win 7 to run STO, no problems with it and frankly much better then my very old Vista steamship. Have all the settings pretty much cranked up without an issue.
The only downside is that I keep having to swap operating systems, not so much off a problem more an annoyance as all my files are on the osx partition. Anyway, I'm just demo-ing Crossweavers crossover software to run STO. Not to many problems. Had to lower the grahics options and the occassionly hiccup but not biggies yet. Tend to be using it for a quick hop on for Doffs and the like so will keep the partiion with STO on it.
However slight ball ache to keep updating the two versions so I'm wondering if I can use my WD external rive (NAS) as the drive for the installation that i could then use for both versions (if i can get Windows to work with the codeweavers elements)
So short version is - does anyone run STO from an external drive? ANy issues with doing so?
Cheers
Tom

Mac user here too, nice investment I love mine to bits! I play on bootcamp, so my Mac's hardrive is separated in half into two partitions. Otherwise i'm tech-deprived on playing it in any other way, external drive included. I know there are a few other Mac users out there so i'll link this around for you.

I am certainly turning in to an i-whore. Had my imac since the new year, splashed out for a top spec 27" (with education discount). Not regretted it since. Still getting used to some of the differences but nothing deal breaking. Just adjustin after 20years of PCs.Only grip I do have is the difference in Word but only because I had it set up a certain way on my old PC and Mac version isn't quite the same.

Have you thought of using paralels or vmware fusion that allows you to run windows apps in osx by loading 2 OS's at once, and believe me macs can run pretty well without much performance loss??? and the latest versions support DX9C so they can run STO
your other option is to use the unofficial mac version.

The codeweavers is essentially a wineskin as I understand it, which is the same as the unofficial mac version. I do have parallels which is very handy but doesn't seem to like STO for me. Think its a graphics option. Don't know OSX well enough yet nor do I have the time to search for an answer to that just at the moment.

I know you can run STO off of an external drive well enough on a Windows PC and I don't see why it wouldn't work on a Mac. Not very helpful advice I know but it might be worth copying the files across to an external drive and just giving it a go and seeing what happens.
Alternatively it might be worth trying to find a Mac forum and asking around there. Whilst there are a number of members here that use Macs I don't know if anyone will be using the same set up as you are so it might be worth putting the question to a broader audience and seeing what they come back with.

STO will run from its folder without being installed, so if you install it on one PC then copy it to an external drive it should run without issue.

Windows 8 FTW.
I'm a PC and will always be a PC. I had a mac a couple years back and I could not stand it, it drove me crazy. The easy answer if you don't want to deal with the partitions is get a cheap Windows 7 PC for STO and keep the Mac for everything else.

BWHAHA Windoze for the what-now?
In relation to the OP, I also use the same setup with my 17" 2011 MacBook Pro seperated into two partitions, and STO looks sweeet. Makes a nice separation of church and state (or play and work, figure out which is which )
If you have USB 3 or you run to your NAS with Ethernet it wouldn't be a big deal, you can do it no problem. As others have mentioned quite a few use Boot Camp just because Virtual Machines - while your still Mac-side - cuts the system in half basically and gives it to VMWare or Parallels, to the detriment of both OSs. I don't know about you, but when I game I like it maxed out, so with that logic the 'hassle' of rebooting and pressing ALT isn't such a big deal to me.
