Crafting FAQ
Q: Why would I to craft at all?
A: Each school has a unique piece of equipment only available from crafting. They can be made in Very rare or Ultra Rare. Also every item has [mods] that are only available through crafting (these mods roll on the rare slot so you can only have one crafting mod on an item of rare or very rare quality). Additionally, Tech upgrades (for increasing the mark and quality of your gear) aside from Basic are only available from crafting.
Also getting to level 15 in a school unlocks a trait for your captain (slots in one of the 8 regular trait slots, not the rep trait slots)
Q: Just how do I craft?
A: All items require a doff and components. Higher mark items require higher grade components (MK XI and XII require purple, dilithium components). To start a crafting project, go to the doff window and click on the R&D tab then find the item you want and click begin. You can then select the specific item you want and it will show you the doff and material requirements as well as give you a breakdown on the chances of the various grades of gear. If you have the Doff you need and the required materials/components, you can click the [Start Task] button to start the project. it will then countdown on a timer and you can collect it after completion (click the [Finish Now] button then the [Collect] items button), You can pay dilithium to complete a project early, the cost is based on how much time is left.
Mods are assigned randomly and you have a chance of getting an item from any grade (color) from common (white) to very rare (purple). The chances are based on the Recommended Skill vs your Current skill (shown at the top right). The higher your current skill is compared to the recommended skill the higher your chance of higher grades and the lower your chance of low grade equipment. Leveling up increases your current skill and higher quality doffs grant a skill bonus. Catalysts(optional) can also be slotted to give a skill bonus.
Unique items additionally require a doff with an R&D school and have chances to craft at Very Rare (purple) or Ultra Rare (ultraviolet/fleet grade)
Q:How do I get components?
Components are crafter much the same as items and equipment. They require materials and a doff to craft. On the item craft screen you can click any redded out components (indicating you don't have enough) to take you to the screen to craft that component or you can do it from the list in the school (listed under the items). Higher grade components require higher grade materials. Additionally, purple components required for MK XI and XII items require dilithium and can't be crafted until you have reached level 5 in that crafting school.
Components are crafted up to 5 at a time, but they have a chance to critically succeed which will grant you triple the number of components (chance is based on your crafting skill). R&D packs in the C-Store also provide a random assortment of components.
Components can be bought and sold on the exchange.
Q: How much Dilithium are we talking?
A: There are two components. One requires 500 dilithium, the other requires 4,000 dilithium. Mk XI items require one 500 dilithium component. Mk XII require one of each (total 4500 dilithium), and unique items require four of the cheap ones and 3 of the expensive ones (18,000 dilithium total). Everything Mk X and below does not have a dilithium cost.
Q: How do I get crafting materials
A: You get lower quality materials from Doff assignments, in missions, and from dilithium mining. Completing PvE queues will also reward a material pack that contains a number of materials; packs from Elite queues have a chance of granting very rare (purple) materials (See HERE for what materials each queue gives. You can convert old particle traces to the new materials. You can also buy R&D packs from the C-Store that has a random assortment of materials.
Materials can also be bought and sold on the exchange.
Q: How do I convert particle traces into materials
A: Right click the trace and select use, it will bring up a conversion screen
Q: What Doffs do I need?
A:

Fabrication Engineer |

Matter-Antimatter Specialist |
Purple Components |
Energy Weapons Officer |
Beam weapons, Cannon Weapons |
Technician |
Beam Consoles, Cannon Consoles |

Q: How do I get R&D Doffs?
A: You can get them out of Doff packs (random chance of course). There is also an assignment "Request R&D Assistance" available at the doff recruitment officer at the academy that has a chance to give crafting doffs and also gives materials and components. It costs 1,000 dilithium to run. The doffs will have normal specializations and additionally an R&D school listed above the specialization.
Q: How do I get catalysts?
A: Lockboxes have a chance to contain catalyst packs and the R&D packs in the C-Store contain catalysts.
Catalysts can be bought and sold on the exchange
Q: How do I level up crafting?
A: Crafting projects grant XP to the school they are crafted under based on the time it takes to craft (10XP/min). When you hit a break point the school will level up. There is also a 20 hour project "Research Project - X" that grants 6000 XP (7000XP on a Critical) (5XP/min) which requires a minimal amount of materials and a Research Lab Scientist.
Q: Are crafted items bound?
A: they are bind on equip like normal dropped items, so you can freely trade them until you slot them on your character/ship at which point they are bound to that character.
Q: I only have one slot? What gives, how do I get more?
A: You start with one crafting project slot. A second unlocks when you get a school to level 2. A third unlocks when you get a school to level 4. A fourth unlocks when you get three schools to level 5. The fifth slot is unlocked when you get a school to level 15.
Q: So I put time into the old crafting system, did I just get screwed?
A: Anyone who had at least 1500 crafting in the old system should have gotten the Genius accolade and a Blue Ferengi Research Lab Scientist that has R&D Aegis.
Some other notes:
Once you are high enough level to unlock crafting you are given a pack of crafting doffs. These doffs can only be used for crafting, they have no specialization for assignments and they can't be donated to the fleet or crunched for higher grade doffs. If you are a high level character you probably shouldn't open it unless you find you are missing a doff you need to craft (even if you are, it may be better to just buy a regular blue doff off the exchange)
Skill bonuses. Along with your crafting school level doffs, and catalysts provide bonuses

Upgrading FAQ
Q: How do I upgrade my items?
A: To upgrade an item either hit the [Upgrade] button at the bottom of the inventory screen and pick an item from a list, or right click the item in the inventory and select the Upgrade option to bring up the upgrade window. Then select a Tech Upgrade and Accelerator (optional). Click the [Apply Upgrade] button to spend the Tech Upgrade and Accelerator to add technology points to the item, when the bar has been filled, press the [Upgrade] button to start upgrading the item. It will take some time before the item is ready for use based on the mark and grade of the item, but you can upgrade up to three items at a time. The amount of Technology points required to upgrade an item is based on its current mark and rarity. Items always gain the next highest mark and have a chance to upgrade to the next highest rarity (which will result in a new modifier being added if applicable).
The chance to upgrade an item to the next rarity is based on the amount of Technology Points invested in an item, and resets every level, though once an item is at max level, continued upgrades carry over, increasing the chance of quality improvement. Some Technology Upgrades and Accelerator grant a bonus to the chance of improving the quality of an item.
The maximum level of upgrade is Mk XIV Epic (gold)
Q: How much does it cost to upgrade.
A: Costs vary by item. The only direct cost for upgrading an item is a dilithium cost associated with applying a Tech Upgrade (there is no cost to start an upgrade once enough Technology Points have been accumulated), as well as the choice to spend dilithium to expedite the upgrade as with crafting. The Dilithium cost to apply a Tech Upgrade is based on the quality of the Tech Upgrade, with higher quality Tech Upgrades requiring more dilithium to apply; however, with the higher amount of Technology Points granted by higher quality Tech Upgrades, it costs less Dilithium overall to upgrade using higher quality Tech Upgrades, and Accelerators can additionally allow for fewer upgrades to be applied. There are also indirect costs in the form of needing to acquire Tech Upgrades and Accelerators
Q: How do I get Tech Upgrades?
A: Basic Tech Upgrades can be bought at item vendors. All grades of tech Upgrades can be crafted once the required level has been reached in the R&D system, and each school has upgrades that can be used on equipment normally covered by that school. Tech Upgrades are crafted the same as other items in the crafting system and require energy credits and components to craft, Superior Tech Upgrades also require a Very rare (purple) material and Superior Tech Upgrade (Experimental)s require very rare and ultra rare (ultraviolet) materials.
Level 5 in a school is required to craft Basic tech Upgrades; level 10 in a school is required to craft Improved Tech Upgrades, and level 15 in a school is required to craft Superior Tech Upgrades and Superior Tech Upgrade (Experimental).
Q: How do I get Accelerators?
A: R&D packs contain a random selection of Accelerators.
Other notes:
Technology Upgrades grant the following amount of Technology Points and cost the following amount of Dilithium to apply:
Tech Upgrade |
Tech Points |

Basic |
2000 |
700 |

Doesn't sound that great, but it's better than nothing. The previous revamp was a downer as well, after maxing out crafting in all 3 schools. Sounds like we have to do that all over again.
So the crafting method is kind of now like the Reputations? But we use Doffs instead of going to Memory Alpha to actually craft things?
Is this different from the Doff missions were you assign doffs to make items currently? Or the same method, but new XP chart/ranks/etc?

I wouldn't really compare it to either system. Yes is is in the doff screen and each craft uses A doff, but it's done totally differently, and sure it has levels and gives a trait at 15, but leveling is different and the traits go in the character general slot rather than rep trait slots.
Crafting is crafting.

There is a Doff mission on the Academy's that rewards R&D mats. You receive all classes of mats with a chance of a Very Rare component. The mission takes 48 hours to complete and costs 1000 dil but is very worth it.
You can pick up the mission from the personnel officer, it's at the bottom of the list.

I've started crafting and found this really useful. One question though, where do you find the R&D mission with the 6000xp and 20 hour wait. I've looked around is it a random mission that appears?

It's not a mission, it's just something you can put in your crafting queue in lieu of actual items.

Hi Curzon,
Thanks for putting this together -- it's been a big help! One question though... as I understand it, if I want to craft Beam Weapons, I can't use just any Energy Weapons Officer, but it must be one of two specific officers (Drolid and Doptid for Feds). And they can only be found by random chance through the "Requesting R&D Assistance", or as random chance from opening Duty Officer Packs, or by purchasing on the Exchange (and the cheapest of them is selling for $5.5-million right now!)
So, I guess I actually have two questions. 1) Is that correct? and 2) If so, isn't that a ridiculous barrier to entry??
