STO: How to Monies.
Q: Oh Cehus, you are so handsome in that Über expensive tuxedo and those stylish yet completely unaffordable vegan plether boots!! How do you make so much money!
A: Well, son, one day you will be as rich and inter-galactically famous for good looks too! Just follow the Cehus Method™!
I’ve been asked many a time how I make money. Below is the “Cehus Method” to generating Energy Credits. This is not the only way to do it, but it is the most effective method I have discovered. The goal of this circuit is to procure Contraband and Prisioners. A stack of five contraband can be turned in for 2000 dilithium, or sold for 250,000 EC. I opt for the money over the ore. Prisoners are the icing on the proverbial cake. They will sell for 6,000-8000 EC or can be donated to a fleet holding for 250 Fleet Credits. Follow the steps below and you’ll be raking in the cash!
Step One: Procure KDF Character and level to 50.
Step Two: Obtain 10 Blue (or better) Conn Officer Doffs, 10 Blue or better Security Officer Doffs, 5 Blue or better Assault Squad Specialist Doffs, 7 Blue or better Operations Doffs (Type doesn't matter), 3 Quartermaster Doffs.
Step Three: Once you have your compliment established, you’ll be following the standard flight plan: Starting at Qo'nos, you'll be setting a dionagional course in the direction of Federation space passing through the following sectors: Qo'nos, Khitomer, Xarantine, Japori, Celes, Kesse, Risa, and finally Alderbaran. This will take you through 6 Duty Officer Jurisdictions, where new assignments will automatically populate as you fly. Upon finishing the flight plan, the next time you log in - reverse your course to pick up new assignments and offload your brig and inventory. The pictured flight plan to the right takes approx. 3 minutes, 45 seconds flying at warp 9.97.
- Disable <Race> Freighter (All but Vulcan)
- Raid Starfleet Foundry
- Intimidate Unaligned System
- Bombard Federation Manufactory
- Offensive on Federation Mining Colony
- Raid on Starfleet Photonics Research Center
- Seizure of Federation Refinery
- Raid on Starfleet Experimental Research Station
- Assault on Starfleet Refitting Station
- Capture Starfleet Ammunition Depot
- Confiscate Contraband from Crew
- Unauthorized Illegal raid on <Race> Colony
- Pillage Ferengi Trading Post
- Inspect Civilian Freighter (In Trade Section, under Quartermaster)
*You will need to have Marauding Tier 3 complete to access this sector block
**You will need to check the “Current map” menu and the Department Head menu for the First Officer screen to see all marauding assignments available in a given sector
As each of these assignments have some variation with cooldowns, you will not be able to run all of these at the same time. Do not be alarmed if you do not see one of these assignments for over a day.
Step Four: Log to your next KDF character and repeat step 3.
Step Five: Repeat Step four until you run out of KDF Characters.
Step Six: Go to bed! You’re done for now. Wait until your assignments expire.
Step Seven: Wake up and put on some pants for God’s sake!
Step Eight: Log on each or your characters and sell what you bring in! Use your Transwarp to go to the fleet starbase to turn in your contraband to your account bank and mailbox for prisoners. You’ll have a lot of contraband and prisoners on your hands here.
Step Nine: If this is your first week doing this, REINVEST! I cannot stress enough how the quality of your doffs will affect the results you will get. If you are using greens and blues, buy purples. You will make a lot more depending on the quality of the doff you are using. Once you are satisfied with the daily contraband intake, see step ten.
Step Ten: Sell your Contraband. You do not need to split stacks, just throw your entire stack on the exchange and multiply the stack size by the current CPU of Contraband. It will sell, just give it time.
There are a few things to keep in mind with this:
1. You will have slow days. As assignments have varying cooldowns, you won’t always be bringing in 25 contraband per character.
2. Don’t be alarmed if you don’t see assignments every day. They all have different cooldowns, you might not see your favorite for a few days.
3. If you do these before going to bed, it is important to cash them in the following morning, as when you turn them in heavily influences the cooldown of the assignment.
4. It’s okay to hold onto your contraband if the market is in a slump at the moment. Personally, I wouldn't sell it for anything less than 45,000 CPU.
5. If you are looking to make new characters for this, make Romulan-aligned KDF. You will have access to the assignments that give you Romulan Bridge Officers.
6. If you are leveling a character doing just Marauding, Invest in Driver Coil. You’ll be going insane flying at warp 6 otherwise.
7. If you have the Solanae Overcharged Warp Core or Singulrity Drive or Borg Subtranswarp Engines, it will speed up the process significantly.
If you have any questions, let me know!

Benefit: on KDF, doffs are cheaper than their Fed counterparts. And don't be afraid to make KDF chars specifically for this!

"Oh but mister Cehus, those Doffs cost like infinity billion energy credits. Are you saying I have to be a millionaire to become a millionaire?"
Have no fear my young... whatever the Star Trek version of a Padawan is... many of these doffs can be obtained from doing the Colonization chains.
Security Officer - K'Punok - T'Ong Nebula
Assault Squad Officer - Lamat'Clan - Betreka Nebula
Operations - Malaar - Arucanis Arm

To add to the doffs that Kains just mentioned:
Projectile Weapons Officers - Hunter Dar - Khazan Cluster
Energy Weapons Officer - Nigulan - Afehirr Nebula
Projectile Weapons Officers - Gul Tain - Ghosts of the Jem'Hadar chain
Are also quite usefull to use for the Marauding Missions

Great post!! Really opened my eyes. I've already started rolling in the EC. I do have some questions, however, if you guys wouldn't mind answering.(and any other tips you guys might be willing to provide on this topic)
1)
Step One: Procure KDF Character and level to 50.
why lvl 50? Won't a char that has access to doffs be enough? I was leveling a KDF when I came across this post. He was 24 I think, had access to doffs, and I've maxed out his Driver Coil skill and now he's at max 9.97 warp, doing fine. (sure a transwarp engine would be cool but it's not worth the hassle I think.)
2)
You will have slow days. As assignments have varying cooldowns, you won’t always be bringing in 25 contraband per character.
The cooldowns are annoying. I'm always confused as when to log in and find the missions. What is the recomended procedure? Start missions at night, turn in in the morning and repeat? Should I wait more? or less?
3)
It’s okay to hold onto your contraband if the market is in a slump at the moment. Personally, I wouldn't sell it for anything less than 45,000 CPU.
There seems to be a bug in the exchange. If I search for Contraband, it only shows ascending price, if I select <ascending price PER unit> it doesn't work as intended, to get the ascending price per unit I have to select <descending price PER unit>. I don't know why that is so.
Initially I sold contraband in stacks of 5, for convenience, but they rarely sell well even when the price was cheap. So I'm forced to post one contraband at a time. (I only have 2 kdf's at the moment so it's not that much of a hassle). So the question is : what is the best strategy for price & stack size to post contraband on the exchange?
4)
If you are looking to make new characters for this, make Romulan-aligned KDF. You will have access to the assignments that give you Romulan Bridge Officers.
I'm really new to the game, what would be the benefit to romulan boffs? I gathered they have Subterfuge,Romulan Operative and Stasis Specialist as possible traits, I still don't see the benefit to my contraband income.
Thanks again and sorry for the long post. Cheers

Romulan BOffs are valuable for selling, not for using. Romulan Captains want them for SRO, yes, but (and I don't know if this is a recent bug or not) a Fed/KDF BOff can not be used to train existing BOffs, they only have the Join option, not the Train option. Only actual Romulan BOffs work for Training, so the prices are pretty high. IIRC, the cheapest Romulan Tac with APO3 was like 100k EC last I looked.

1. The Quantum slipstream ability. It saves a LOT of time commuting between blocks.
2. This is why I usually clump my assignments right before bed, that way, they are on something as close to a 24 hour cycle as possible.
3. When searching on the exchange, It's important to use catagory search settings. For contraband, it's always the commodities tab. Use the ascending price PER unit search and find the PPU of the largest stack in the first two pages. That's going to be your market rate.
4. Exactly as Dark said. If you are lucky enough to get a Rom Tac with BO3 or TS3, that's going to be a lot of money, regardless of if they are SROs or not

Thanks for your replies.
Instead of quantum slipstream I use transwarp to mission location. No cooldown, and the ones for the starting sectors are really cheap. (test of mettle costs 0 ec). Call it an "exploit" if you will

Here's the method I use for farming contraband, based on Cehus' post(I will try not to repeat anything stated there):
1.Create new KDF character (KDF-aligned romulans are NOT ok, at lvl 11 they don't have access to all sector blocks, very annoying)
2.Level char to lvl 11. (that's when you get access to doffs) This takes ~ 2 - 2.5 hrs.
3.Buy some cheap green doffs(look to OP for what doffs to buy)
4.My recommended route for marauding assignments: Omega Leonis -> Eta Eridiani -> Regulus -> Pi Canis -> Tau Dewa -> Psi Velorum -> Alpha centauri -> Iota Pavonis>>transwarp to mission starting location Qo'nos (Test of mettle takes you to Qo'nos for free).
Notes:
-IMPORTANT: max out Driver Coil skill asap!
-Upgrade your warp core from the Shipyard every chance you get; as your char levels from the marauding assignments
-As stated in op, do this before going to bed and collect rewards in the morning
-Remember, before starting your run, clear out your brig. Either by selling prisoners or sending them to labor camps(KDF security officer assignment), or whatever. You might not have time to do so in the morning and if your brig is full you won't be able to collect rewards for some assignments.
-Sell contraband on exchange and reinvest in blue doffs.
-If your roster is getting full, maybe send old green marauding doffs to a new farming KDF character.
-A ship with high turning rate in sector space helps a bit
-In the Options->Controls screen set "Keep moving during contact dialogs" to ON
-For brand new character, make sure you go to the Klingon Academy, and sometimes in sector space, and pick up the requisition officers assigments (conscript, etc) to get free common doffs
Personal note: I usually do this before bed while watching some star trek voyager using a player that has an <always on top> feature. I keep the player in the corner of the screen. I have about 4 chars doing this so it takes a while to get the assignments for all of them.(I rather do this than Tour of the Galaxy, that's just no fun). I get between 10 and about 25 contraband per char per day, I think. While I agree that quantum slipstream and some assimilated engines would help a lot, I do not think it is worth leveling a new char to 50 and then farming omega rep and marks just to speed this up.
Use these tips to become rich and inter-galactically famous as Cehus, and pay your respects to him for his great guide.
I will continue to add tips if I find any that are useful.

One thing you might want to consider doing is working out of the Fleet Starbase to drop items in your account bank. There are less loading screens and running to get to your bank. Additionally, if you log out there, you will be returned to whatever sector space you were in before.

I'm curious, why specifically are you looking to use Conn Officers? Are they just stand-ins for Tactical doffs? I don't recall many of the assignments needing Conn Officers, but, well, memory and I aren't really on speaking terms...
I've long used Marauding as a source of Contraband, but I never thought to cash it out in the Exchange before (I turn it in for dilithium). As a proof-of-concept for my own curiosity, last night each of my 5 KDF chars did this run and put a stack of 20 contraband up for sale. Here's hoping they move quickly...
