    COMMUNITY DEBATE

    MAY THE 4th

    stvsw

Traditionally our community debates usually take the form of subjects where this is no 'right' answer, after all the point of them is to debate which is a bit harder if there is a right and a wrong already defined. For this week though we will have a debate to which there is a right and a wrong answer but that doesn't mean we can't have fun sharing our opinions.

In just a few days it will be a very special day to hardcore science fiction and fantasy fans and this debate is in honour of them and to that day.

It is the day on which Harry Potter, a Vorlon citizen from Jaynestown who wanted to know more, successfully completed his excellent journey across Cybertron to destroy the Halo ring in the fires of the time vortex on behalf of the SGC by using the power of Greyskull thus banishing Magneto from the 12 colonies forever and shutting up Wesley in H. P. Lovecraft's critically acclaimed Jurassic World: Neo. May the 4th.

So, which is better Star Trek or Star Wars and why?

Alright, I'll bite first. And Mr. Halsey, it seems you've been reading Douglas Adams a bit too much, if you ask me. Wink

I am a huge Wars and Trek fan, but Star Wars has the bigger part of my nerd heart. I cannot pinpoint the exact reasons why, but I can think of a few things that probably contribute. In Trek, I love the sleek nature of technology, the general good will of the Federation, the optimistic mind of most of the writers and creators. Trek definitely has an edge there. And of course, Trek definitely has more science and military links that many fans love. I know a great deal of simmers (text roleplayers) come from the US/European/etc militaries, and find a kinship in Trek.

Now for Star Wars, there is just an edge and grit to it that cannot be beat. It feels more "real" rather than optimistic. It becomes more a drama than "living life". It is less about the science and more about the mythology. It is focused on a handful of heroes who go up against all odds (this last part happens in Trek for sure, especially the movies, but I think this is the entire focus on Wars). Wars is the true Space Opera (especially if you take out the Phantom Menace and Clone Wars movies), whereas Trek is a great Series of Space Adventures. Trek is a cultural or sociopolitical commentary, whereas Wars is a play on our hopes and dreams in fantasy world.

Yeah, so for me, I crave the raw and real adventure. One might argue NuTrek hits that stride a bit, but for now Wars has that epic tale I love in my sci-fi movies (and even series like Rebels). Love both to pieces, but I choose Wars.

I'm sorry I cant vote, lol. I love them both. I grew up with both of them. But my thought process is similar to Cayman in the way trek and wars is seen. In Star Wars I'll be honest, I'm tried of all the Jedi/Sith it's why I'm looking forward for Rogue One. The thing about trek it's almost too perfect. It's a nice goal to have this utopia all going for the same goal but honestly I don't think that will ever happen. Watching the evening news will show that. I feel this debate is kinda comparing fruit to a candy bar (no offense). One that started as a show and gave more reflecting on societies issues vs a galaxy always at war with each other (IMO because of these dang force users...) in movie aspect. Now if they made a Klingon Trek series I think it be like Wars, lol.

    I voted for Star Trek.

While I do like Star Wars, I've always prefered scifi with more thought to it. Having multiple television shows, Star Trek has had the opportunity to be more deep than Star Wars. I'm discounting comics has those are generally not canon.
