So I was browsing the good old internet and came across this - http://www.modiphius.com/star-trek.html - looks pretty good, but as it is not released yet I don't know if it will be worth it. Anyone have any previous experience with this publisher and have any idea what can be expected from this?

The only experience I've had with this company is through their Achtung Cthulhu line, which used the Savage Worlds gaming system. The products weren't bad - in fact they were pretty well thought out in terms of source material. I'm a Savage Worlds fanboy, so it worked for me. A lot of my friends and colleagues simply used the materials as idea mines for their Chaosium Cthulhu game (they prefer that system).

Not sure this helps much with your question, but thought I'd toss my two cents' worth in.

Edit: I went ahead and signed up for the playtest just now...also, I was not familiar with the 2d20 system that it will be using. I practiced my apprentice level google-fu and found several links to explain it. Not sure I like what I've read, but I'd have to see it play out at a table before really passing judgment.

No previous first hand experience but I wrote an article about the launch announcement HERE, when I looked in to their history it did seem to me that they had worked on a number of well known brands before and had seemed to be quite successful.

The fact that the publishing director (Chris Birch) was asking for fan input on their forums certainly looked like a good sign although I don't yet know how much fans have been able to influence what they are doing with the game.

I sincerely hope not. I don't think CBS or Paramount have done a particularly good job when it has come to licensing Star Trek products for quite some time. I'm guessing it's the 50th anniversary that has seen them become more active in this regard of late and I'm hopeful that translates in to more and better products for Star Trek fans to enjoy.

It certainly looks and sounds interesting, if the UFP had a physical location, we could do more with this game! But Silynns idea of playtesting as a group is a good idea, if a number of people get together and do get to play it, let us all know how it goes

I don't think a physical location is required, there are plenty of online resources and they said themselves that physical maps and models were optional, but I know what you mean, I currently play D&D with a few friends every now and again, and it just feels better somehow if you are all together around a circular table with pizzas or something, struggling to fit all of the books and character sheets on one table. Reminds me of the beginning of E.T.!

A community playtest is certainly doable; you could always use a free program like https://roll20.net/ which I've used for playing D&D when we were on opposite sides of the country. To be fair the older Star Trek RPG was pretty fun if a little complicated; I hope this one is as good.

I'd be interested in doing a playtest. I agree with Orri on using Rolld20 for a virtual table top (VTT).
