I know I don't plan on buying the game personally, though if it was on sale at 95% off, I might consider it! Depending on if there is anything there that makes me want to play a game, otherwise it'd just be filling up my Steam library like many other games...

I think it could be too little too late. Players have been put off and the game rep has been tarnished, its not beyond saving, but trying to win over a disgruntled player base will take a lot of time, money and effort, things that the gaming industry don't tend to focus on post release any more (sadly).

That's a fair point. I personally bought into the hype and had it pre-ordered. The game was never bad, but it's definitely for a certain niche, and the lack of promised content made it difficult to fill even that. The exploration aspect was repetitive, the survival aspect was either too punishing or laughable, and the barebones multiplayer aspect promised was totally absent. I think No Man's Sky outlines the dangers of developers making infinite promises that they cannot immediately deliver. It's an issue with a lot of hyped games, but it was particularly disappointing from No Man'a Sky.

I like the game, I just like it a lot less after an hour of playing it. It's remarkable how a procedurally generated universe gets super boring super quickly.

I was interested in it, but as I was already backing and more so looking forward to Star Citizen I never picked up No Man's Sky. After the reviews and the initial launch I'm glad for now that I decided to wait. The update still hasn't peaked my interest enough to play it. That's not to say I'll never pick it up, but as Connor mentioned the game is made specifically for a certain niche which I don't think I fall under currently.

I would say too late in all honesty. I'm sure there are peopl who enjoy the game and power to them. One thing that I don't understand is the new base building aspect. The whole point of the game is to be constantly on the move and moving towards the centre of the galaxy/universe so why have a base building feature? It just seems counter to the entire goal of the game, to always be exploring new worlds not going half way "sod this, I'll just stay here now". Perhaps that's development time that could have been used to improve the game so you could have fairly important things like gas giants and other stellar objects such as neutron stars and pulsars. The game was just too bare bones for me, I tried it at a friends and it was meh to say the least. Would take Elite: Dangerous over it any day of the week for exploration.

Interestingly I was reading yesterday that it had climbed back to number 2 in the steam charts. I think this must be attributed to people taking a look at the new content. An explorer game where you build a base? is this a contradiction I wonder.

It's climbed up to number 4 in top sellers, but the reviews are still mostly negative. It's a start, I suppose.

Definitely too late for me, but to each their own. I rented it via Gamefly, played it for thirty minutes, repackaged it, and eagerly awaited the mail carrier to take it away and bring me absolutely anything else, up to and including an Atari 2600 ET cartridge.

I'm still trying to find a decent sandbox space MMORPG with fun exploration, worthwhile crafting, and well-managed PvP/PvE where leveling doesn't make most of the game content obsolete. I think I have a better chance of digging up the Holy Grail in my backyard in Texas but any recommendations? Or should I just give up looking and accept what's out there?

I used to play an excellent space sim called StarQuest Online. Super outdated, but it was really great fun. 5 bridge consoles manned by players, chaotic space combat, lots of fun to take a shuttle and explore a planet in one of its thousands of systems, even more fun starting on a training ship and eventually working to get your own command. Unfortunately it was shot down a few years back and I haven't seen anything like it since. Dual Universe looks quite promising but I'll drop dead before I set my expectations high after NMS.

I'm glad i waited on No Man's Sky. I dislike cartoonish worlds (which is why I don't play WoW) and refuse to commit to a crowd-fund unless it has preset, measurable, published milestones. Star Citizen looked fantastic but look at how long it's taking. And I'm not into unfettered PvP like Eve where a few players can trash months' to years' worth of work by thousands of other players just for grins and giggles.

So it sounds like what I'm looking for isn't available as an MMORPG yet. I'll stick with STO and stand-alone PC games then.

Hevelin have you tried Eliteangerous? It's got the whole Milky Way galaxy out there to explore with PvE and PvP should you want to do that. Also has a module upgrade system and crafting via the Engineer contacts. It can be quite slow paced, but I really enjoy it. I'm in my Lakon ASP Explorer about 15,000LY towards the Galactic Core atm passing from one Nebula to the next while plotting a course to Saggitarius A. You'll ideally need a joystick for it, but people play it perfectly capably using mouse and keyboard.

Just putting these here for you to watch, Guardians has some pretty awesome updates expecially for exploration with the new obelisks popping up.

I briefly heard about this game, never did get the chance to check it out as I was quite busy at the time.

Shame that it tanked so terrible, could've been a good game if the developers didn't release it so early.

I played E for a good long while, it is an amazing game. Combine it with VoiceAttack for verbal commands and it rocks. I was having some graphic issues, so I stepped away for awhile until I can upgrade my graphics card.

But if you have not played it, I highly recommend it!
