    Season 6 Episode 19
    Air Date: April 13th, 1998

Synopsis: Captain Sisko is putting up yet another KIA/MIA list, and he makes a final decision, the Romulans must enter the war, at all costs.

    SPOILER ALERT:

This is my favorite Deep Space Nine episode, it shows a side of the federation and Sisko that we aren't accustomed too, war changes people, as well as the "Needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few."

This is an episode that I can watch often and not get bored of, the introductory and final monologue set a fantastic tone as well.

What do you all think? Personally I like Garak saying: "All that it cost, was the life of one Romulan senator, one criminal and the self-respect of one federation officer, I don't know about you but I call that a bargain."

I wonder how that two part episode would have been different, maybe they would have shown the Senator and what he was actually planning with the dominion. I imagine that the episode cut would have been Senator Vreenak and his so famous .

Any Ideas how they would have gone if they wanted it to be a two parter?

One of the thoughts I had on this episode was not just the two people they killed, but the hundreds of thousands (if not more) of Romulans that would die during the events of the war, as their blood would also be on his hands. Do the ends justify the means? Would the Dominion have one day turned on the Romulan Empire? Did Sisko just use the Romulans as cannon fodder to slow the stream of Human deaths?

I did enjoy how this episode showed two men manipulate and trick an entire empire into war, all while other members of humanity (Section 31) were also committing genocide against an entire race (the Founders). Definitely not Gene's vision of Trek, but I think a better reflection of how people see the world today.

I never really put much thought into it that way, I read somewhere that the Romulan Fleet ended up taking a much larger beating then the Starfleet and KDF ships because they were all using the D'Deridex warbirds and the Jem'hadar ships were known to Kamikaze into them. It makes me think that the war might have severely hurt the RSE, along with the obliteration of most of the Tal'shiar fleet (along with the Obsidian order's).

I do believe that the Dominion would have eventually turned on the Romulans though, for the sheer fact that they are fiercely patriotic and aren't the type to bend themselves over to others. (Another reason might be that the Romulans would try and control the dominion using cunning and subterfuge, which probably wouldn't fly with the founders and would have ended up like Cardassia Prime...)

It isn't Gene's vision, but that is something both DS9 and Enterprise did well at, taking real world issues and putting a Trek spin on it.

That's one way of seeing it, but I think the episode posed the question mark for every viewer too. Situations like these also are easier to correct morally when being reviewed at a later date, but such military decisions are swift actions and to best favor one's own kind by the people involved, something to ponder over on as well.

Given the circumstances where the Federaton was already gong to loose the war, posting the weekly casuality list (where I believe for any Commander that is as good as loosing self respect where so many young promising men and women keep dying), Sisko decided to make a deal with the devil for the right reasons. A deal with the devil perhaps for Sisko and the federation, but peace for every citizen in the federation. So take that as anyone may really, this is the real grey area, how does one define what is right or what is wrong here?

I agree, this isn't Gene's typical vision - however his vision is paradise. What happens when there's trouble in paradise though? That's pretty much why I love Deep Space Nine just as much as any Star Trek series.

I'm not sure how I feel about this episode, it's a good episode, very memorable and certainly progressed the storyline very well! It was quite a dark episode, like a lot of Deep Space Nine episodes at certain points, good but didn't really click with what I want to watch. Hard to explain, didn't dislike the episode, it was good.
