So, this video popped up on my facebook feed...
And my childhood was partially crushed.
All those wasted hours in Red and Blue, trying to catch that one Pokemon, only to rage quit and restart the Gameboy and try again...
Apparently, Lowering the HP below 1/3rd doesn't do anything meaningful to the catch rate, if the Pokemon's HP is 100, the chances of catching it don't change (by any significant amount or at all) if you lower it below 33hp or to 1hp.
Sometimes, because math, its better to use a Great Ball than an Ultra ball.
Sometimes, because math and luck, you don't even have to attack it, just put it to sleep and throw an ultra ball. In Mewtwo's case, you have a ~17-19% chance to catch it.
If only I had known this 20 years ago... Excuse me while I go weep in a corner.

I figured it was all rng but I am a bit surprised that weakened HP doesn't matter much. Catch rates are obviously higher for common Pokémon than rare ones.
