So what do people think of it? It sounds like a interesting idea but I've seen systems like this go bust because there simply wasn't enough people participating in it to match you well...and with the PvP being DoA for as long as I can remember in STO...I can't say if a whole lot will participate to make the system worth while.

I'm really intrigued. I think the players just have to understand that this system needs a few matches u set its belt to "find your level". No playing once, and going all ragequit/table flip when you lose that first one.

I play this shooter that sorta has a similar system...and it doesn't match up very well...Because not a whole lot of people do ranked matches in it. Me and my friend who were unranked...we got put into a team with 2 gold and a silver ranked...against a team of 4 gold ranked and 1 silver ranked.
I'm worried things like this will happen with STO too...simply put because not enough people participate you'll end up getting outclassed because the system is just trying to put you in a match...any match, without making you sit around for who knows how long.

I have had kind of the same experience in Pro Evolution Soccer. It definitely needs some time before a system like this works and the players need to adapt to it, too. We will see how it works out.

I personally don't play PvP games mainly because it is frustrating to play with random teams that are running around like headless chickens with lopsided battles being the result. I play games to relax, not to rage.
I think some of the reasons why PvP didn't work so well in STO was there wasn't much incentive to play it and because there wasn't a system in place that kept the highest level players from completely steamrolling the lower level players.

I can see some problems with this system. What if there isnt enough interest to even form teams related to your "skill level"? Will it pop you to the skill level that has the players or will you just be out of luck?

I will be interested to see how this will work out in practice.
One of the other problems with PvP in STO is that a lot of consoles can become very OP in a PvP setting, which is why a number of tournaments put restrictions on thing.

Yeah...that is pretty much what I'm worried about...if there isn't enough interest then the system will be forced to put you on a uneven plain just to match you up with for a game.

I like the sound of it, quite similar to systems used in some games at the moment, such as The Division, as that uses a gear score, ranked up on your specific gear to match you with similar people. Hopefully a step in the right direction.

The gear score system in The Division was flawed at the start. The scores were misrepresenting how effective a player's weapons and gear were, often the stats of each weapon and gear that is equipped on the player were much stronger than the gear scores displayed. I was opposed to the implementation of that system because of this and it resulted in players with lower gear scores being kicked out of teams. At one point, I was kicked off a team just because I was 2 scores lower than the max. It's been revamped since then.
Having powerful gear is one thing, being able to effectively use it is entirely different.

Most likely there will be some issues with the system but I think this is a step in the right direction and hopefully it'll get better in time. It will be difficult for Potential System to make STO worse than it currently is.
The Division gear score system was a good idea but pretty poorly implemented. It created paradox situations like with good builds with lower gear scores that were actually stronger as gear score completely ignored stats, gear sets, talents and mods. For Dark Zone (PvP) it was even worse implementation as you could end up in a higher gear score group based on gear devs considered to be essential and not your real gear score... and yes, people were being kicked out from teams because of their gear score but I wouldn't consider that as a reason against it. PuGs are known as often being problematic and unreliable in all mmo's.
Anyway... I hope this will bring back life to STO... and some players too.
