Jamie Matthieson should be allowed to write all the things, especially if there's a horror element to them. That episode was fantastic, and I even liked Nardole! He's good when he's not just being used for comic relief.

I understand the time limitations (a constant frustration for me with the new series), but I would have liked the supporting cast to be fleshed out a little bit. Or at all. I don't feel like I knew a single thing about any of them, which is a shame. A good supporting cast, even just one good character, can really bolster a story (see last week). They also put Bill in virtually the same predicament twice, and neither time did I feel any genuine sense of peril if only because I know she's still around for the rest of the series. A shame, because it was fantastically done both times. Though the first time did lead to the rather interesting development that led to the cliffhanger.

It was nice to see a genuinely scary and evil enemy for a change, rather than opting for another 'misunderstood monster'. While that can be interesting, I feel it's far too overused in Who these days. Sometimes you just want an enemy who you can feel ok about hating.

Next week looks interesting. I'm hoping it's not the story that breaks the brilliant streak the series has been on. It's Moffat though, so it could be brilliant or terrible, and Missy's back (and possibly Simm's Master? Not sure which episode he's in) and I've not liked either interpretation of the character. So we'll see. At least we get to find out what's in the vault.

It seems I have a lot of catching up to do. I was kind of lukewarm towards the new Doc and ... somehow forgot to keep watching halfway through his first season. I hope that season is on Amazon prime so I can binge it and hang with the cool kids.

I would recommend catching up. It took about half that series for him to be an identifiable character, so you may have stopped just as he started to get more interesting. =P

And so far, both Series 9 and 10 and vast improvements on Series 8, so if you can push through the rest of that (and there's some good episodes in the second half) it's only uphill from there.

What are everybody's thoughts on 'Extremis'? It appears to be the TV show embodiment of Marmite on Twitter with people either loving it or hating it.

I found 'Extremis' to be thought provoking and philosophical. This season is tackling moral dilemmas and social issues amazingly and it's doing an incredible job of educating people on these issues. 'Extremis' definitely carries on this theme with a few bits of comedy thrown in (Pope in your bedroom, anybody?). Peter Capaldi and Michelle Gomez really stood out for me during this episode. I've missed the dynamic between the Doctor and Missy.

I really enjoyed the episode. I had some concerns through the first half, but making everything a simulation alleviated those. The idea of that is fantastic, and I'm surprised it hasn't been done before. I mean, I suppose it has in various things on a smaller scale (I'm on a Star Trek forum, after all), but taking it to that extreme seems so inherently logical for a species that can do it.

Capaldi's acting was really great. He plays a damaged Doctor incredibly well, and I don't think any of the other Doctors could have sold the performance in the way he does. Getting the opportunity to do that really seems to bring out the best in his performance, and it was certainly one of the (many) reasons Heaven Sent was so great. I'm looking forward to more of that.

I'm glad to see Moffat writing an episode that's a bit more scaled down than some of his previous fare. It was still massive in scope, but rather than having five or six ideas that he's decided to shove into one story, he had one big idea (with a side of Missy) that he allowed to develop through smaller stages. It was nicely done.

A good and apt Descartes reference too, with the Veritas literally speaking about an evil demon that is deceiving everyone. Although the text predates him by some centuries, so who knows? Maybe in the simulation Descartes got a peek and decided to use the idea himself.
