Can someone explain to me what a Heavy weapon is?

Unlike standard starship weapons, Heavy Weapons, are not affected by weapon firing modes, such as those granted by granted by bridge officer abilities. They can only be equipped on ships possessing a Heavy Weapons Slot.
Tier 6 Raiders and all Tier 6 starships with a Tactical Commander seat, 7 weapons, and 1 or fewer Hangar Bays will receive a Heavy Weapons Slot and access to a basic upgradeable Heavy Weapon.

I think at some point after the initial announcement of Heavy Weapons, the requirements were loosened to allow for T5 ships to get them too, but confirm before you go acting on that.

They are a lot of fun, the Miradorn raider has a double torpedo launcher with a pretty cool explosion effect. It also has a 360 arc, so there is no where to run

It does look like T5 and T5-U ships did get the Heavy Weapon slot (I checked mine last night). However, there will only be a Heavy Weapons available (for free) under the Dilithium Store for ships that are eligible for one and are T6.

So, I have 4 T5/T5U ships that now have a Heavy Weapon slot, but only 1 T6 ship with the Heavy Weapon slot. Looking under the Dilithium Store, I had only one Heavy Weapon item available to be claimed.

So where do I find a "Heavy Weapon" to mount? My T6 Defiant seems to have this slot, however no idea how to acquire this weapon.

Free one from the Dilithium Store, 1 from the new rep system and i think there is 2/3 from ships the alliance escorts have the rail gun and i think the new lockbox/lobi ships have one each but not to sure on them or if they do have it if it is different on each one.

On the STO Reddit someone did the math and the free one is apparently a net DPS loss due to the power drain of the item. It only appears to be the free version of the weapon though and apparently the railgun and flak versions are good.

I don't know offhand, but it should be easy enough to find out if you check out the Ship vendor on ESD/NR/Qo'nos

There just selling Beam Arrays/Banks and Torpedo's/Mines no Heavy Weapons either t5 or t6.

The default Heavy Weapon, the ion thingamabob, I think is claimed via the Dilithium Store (but its cost is 0, so don't freak).

Yes, Dilithium store, reclaim. If any of your toons has a qualifying ship you'll find the Ion heavy weapon there. Of course it can only be used on qualifying ships so claiming it on a toon that doesn't have a ship with the heavy weapons slot is a waste of inventory space....I know that from experience.

It is possible that a couple of my toons I claimed it on but can't use it do actually have a qualifying ship and I just haven't found it in dry dock yet though.

Yeah that Heavy Weapon is a T6 for level 50s I'm looking for a T5 Heavy Weapon for level 40s.
