On the STO Reddit someone did the math and the free one is apparently a net DPS loss due to the power drain of the item. It only appears to be the free version of the weapon though and apparently the railgun and flak versions are good.

Which really makes me sad...other than the bolt being kinda big I liked the weapon...such a shame it does such little damage and has such a silly requirement to hit other targets...it should just chain to other targets like the isometric charge....then it would actually have a little use...plus maybe up the damage a bit.

As there are T5/T5U ships that got a heavy weapons slot there there should be a heavy weapon that comes with them. Since the only one they put in the erclaim tab is the Ion one, the only way to get one of the T5 ones would be to own one of the qualifying C-store T5 ships. You could possibly dismiss it and then reclaim it and the "new" ship should come with a heavy weapon useable at lvl 40.

Just a guess but I think the Vorgon flying dildo is one of the qualifying ships also, so if you have that one you could try dismissing and reclaiming it.

I will be playing in just a few minutes to get my last set of tokens for the new carrier. I will try and remember to check the Vorgon ship (and try the dismiss/reclaim) and report back.

I remembered to check. Reclaiming the Vorgon heavy escort it came with the same Ion cannon, Major General rank (it was on my KDF toon). I don't have a toon at less than level 60 to try it with but since that ship (if I remember right) can be claimed and used at level 40, maybe a level 40 toon claiming it gets a different weapon that can actually be used at that level .
