I recently hit level 57 and it seems that my ship keeps getting torn to shreds by every opponent I go up against. The same problem happens to me in ground combat, it just seems that I lose hitpoints too fast and I don't do enough damage. Opponents are meaty and I'm paper thin.
Can someone explain the ways builds work and how to make a good one? The beginners guides that I've been looking at are a confusing jumble that is either too confusing or too simple for me.
My ship build looks like this -
My ground build is pretty basic, with a tier 13 pistol and the best armor that I've chanced upon.
What do I need to be doing?

FYI if you're playing the Delta Quadrant missions, I remember those being harder than normal because the Vaadwaar use a lot of sciency space magic on you.
You should probably go for the Solanae Space Set that you get by doing A Step Between Stars mission. If I remember, it's a pretty good starter set until you start unlocking some rep gear.
You're an escort ship using what looks like a torpedo build. I'm not saying that torpscorts are unviable or anything, but they are certainly much trickier to pull off than a beam build, you need good doffs and everything to increase your rate of fire because the shared reload times on a lot of torps can really kill your damage output otherwise. To make it work correctly I recommend studying torp builds a bit more.
