    Hello all!

Steam's summer sale brings a good bargain to EVE Online's packs, but I have a couple of questions:

    - What is the different between F2P and buying a "Premium Edition"? (As that's what I'm interested in)
    - How much time gated/centric is this game? I don't have too much time on my hands to be able to get to a level in the game where I can actually enjoy myself.

If I remember any other queries I'll post them below!

    - What is the different between F2P and buying a "Premium Edition"? (As that's what I'm interested in)
F2P characters (Alpha's) have skill, gear and ship limitations. Premium Edition will give you 30 days of Omega Status (subscription), 650 PLEX (in-game currency) and the option to train one more character on your account for 30 days. It's a good deal but subscription is for one month only.

Here are all current subscriptioon options:

    - How much time gated/centric is this game? I don't have too much time on my hands to be able to get to a level in the game where I can actually enjoy myself. (As that's what I'm interested in)
Skills don't depend on your time spent in-game. You can select skills you want your character to learn and skill training itself happens in real time, whether or not players are logged into the game. To cover offline times, up to 50 skills may be queued up into the training queue. While on an Alpha-Clone, however, all queued skills must start their training within the next 24 hours.

    Hello all!

Steam's summer sale brings a good bargain to EVE Online's packs, but I have a couple of questions:

    - What is the different between F2P and buying a "Premium Edition"? (As that's what I'm interested in)
While I don't know what exactly is in the Steam premium version, I do know it includes some subscription time. Subscribed characters (ie. omega clones) have access to everything. Unsubscribed characters (ie. alpha clones) can only access a limited number of skills, and equipment it unlocks; ship-wise this means anything up to basic cruisers of the race you selected for the character, but being that it's the most useful and likely the most prolific ship class in the game, is a really good level to sit at nonetheless. Skill training is also half speed (though the tooltips will tell you Omega is actually double speed, don't believe it, as that's the old base level)

    - How much time gated/centric is this game? I don't have too much time on my hands to be able to get to a level in the game where I can actually enjoy myself.
Skills train passively. You set a skill, and it slowly ticks to completion, so you don't have to play the game at all to unlock new ships and equipment. of course, on the other hand, you do still have to actually go out and earn money to buy things. As for being up to a level where you can enjoy yourself; that's hard to say. EvE doesn't have an end-game like most MMOs do, and goals are ultimately up to you. I can't say what you would personally enjoy, but plenty of people have been able to find fun flying the basic frigates you start with access to.

It is important to note that bigger isn't necessarily better. Skilling for a titan may sound like a neat goal, but smaller ships are still plenty effective (as I mentioned, the bulk of many fleets tend to be made up of medium sized ships)

I find that the F2P of EVE Online is stupid.

I have a character that cannot fly some ship because of the restrictions.

What else should they do? I admit, the racial restriction can be a bit annoying, but the ship class restriction is perfectly fine. As I mentioned, even if you do have access to every ship available, you're going to be in a cruiser most of the time anyway.

Were I to have my subscription lapse, I'd be more annoyed I can't use my fancy Tech 2 gear than my ships (admittedly, I'd be miffed about not being able to use my Astero, or barring that, a Buzzard)

What they should do, let peoples use up to Battleships, then every other i don't care. But giving F2P player only 1 tip of the iceberg is not a good move. I used to pay every month up to 3 accounts sometimes. Yes i was that crazy. But when i heard they put it Free to play, i decided to take another look.

To my surprise, i cannot used 3/4 of every ship i have, i can understand blocking T2 and T3 ships. But telling me you will be flying cruiser most of the times or frigate, i don't buy that. I was doing mission level 4 with 3 battleships and after that, getting all the wrecks and loot with maximize industrial ship. Mining with the big mining ship.

They tone down the access, that i understand, but the restriction on some T1 ships and some skills, i find it too much.

Actually what they need to do is to not allow PVP in .07 space and above and no killing ever in 1.0 space. Unless you flag yourself PvP. I would still be playing if I didn't have to worry about being killed in 0.7 space or above. Many games that have both PvE and PvP work great because they allow the players who don't want to PvP play and the ones who do want to PvP can. There is null space and there is low sec space. That is where the pvp should be taking place and you would know that entering that space they it is more risky and possible to get podded but then you know that because of what space your in.

This thread got slightly off topic... but what the heck... here is my two cents...

I wouldn't say that EVE F2P model is stupid, it is just limited and for someone who had 3 subbed accounts it looks like"wow wth is this?" but for new players, especially if they are casual players, or someone who wants to feel the game it is ok and personally, I would just like to see more skills available for F2P characters. Furthermore, if F2P players are part of an active community these limitations are even less noticeable.

When it comes to PvP... The most irritating thing for me are random wardecs with no limitations and in my opinion that is the biggest problem EVE has as it turns people away from the game... but then again most threats can be remediated by knowing rules of engagement, maintaining situational awareness and using alt characters or NPC and alt Corps and we plan to start supporting some of these anti-griefing measures very soon.
