Okay, so about three days ago, my dad's computer got some virus that was crashing his computer left and right. So we got into safe mode and tried to use all the anti-virus software we can, Ad-Aware, Norton Antivirus etc.

It couldn't remove the piece of crap, but it detected it was a backdoor Trojan. We tried to do some other stuff. We tried system restore, didn't work. We even had to resort to buying a brand new hard drive. That didn't work, we replaced the graphics card, that didn't work either.

If it's that bad, I would maybe suggest the nuclear option.

Back up what you can and reinstall windows with a full disk format.

Make sure you back up your windows key (this tool helps, free: https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/)

And grab all the drivers you need from your manufacturers website.

Sophos Virus Removal Tool is great for removing almost any virus.

If you aren't able to install anti-virus programs properly due to the virus(es), you could try MalwareBytes Chameleon. A bit complicated, but I've always known at least one of the options work to allow it to install.

But I agree with Aceman - by this point, it's probably easier to copy all of your documents/pictures/music onto an external hard drive, make a note of all of your hardware/drivers in Device Manager then download them on another computer (or at least your Network drivers!), make a note of all of your product keys (Speccy can also help with this) then just boot to your Windows install media and delete the partitions.

I'm not sure why you thought replacing the graphics card would have any effect on a virus? But replacing the hard drive should have removed it, assuming you reinstalled everything from scratch on the new HDD cleanly.

Unless you've somehow got a virus that has affected the BIOS partition, but in order to determine that we'd need more information such as PC make/model, operating system, exact symptoms of crashing such as BSOD errors, behaviour beforehand etc... You get the idea.

    Good luck Smile

I agree with this. At a certain point, it is just time to completely format and start again. I keep my back-ups on an external 3 TB USB (3.0) drive. Thus, if I truly have a major system issue, the "Nuclear option" is a bit more readily viable.

Also, if you purchased your computer from any sort of vendor with a pre-installed OS, the Windows Key is usually on the case (likely near the Serial Number of the computer).

I hope the simple format/reload works out for you. Smile
