They lay it put pretty clearly. Amanda had a child before she and Sarek were together. Amanda and Sarek started their relationship in the late 2220's. If Commander Burnham is around 30, like her actress is, the timing works.

From what I've read, she's the daughter of Spock's mother from another marriage, and after her husband died, she married Sarek, and Sarek was a father figure for his wife's daughter.

Unless she was just taken in by Sarek and it's not a blood relation.

If what's been said by news sites/blogs is true, it is a blood relation on the Maternal side.

Yet because she is not mentioned in TOS by Spock, they've written in a new character not taking into account history. Spock was born 2230 and the events of Discovery are 2255, so 25 years after his birth, he would talk about his adopted sister, no?

We are unclear how old she will be when Sarek takes her in.

Also, Spock didn't mention his half brother until STV. It is safe to assume Spock speaks very little about his family affairs.

Doesn't matter what kind of sister it is, tbh. She's a Starfleet officer, and from the look and sound of the trailer, she's somewhat going to be important. That would justify Spock to at least mention her successes as one.

Did they hire tumblr fanfic posters to write the main character?

It doesn't matter her relation to Spock, in terms of her career in Starfleet, but the fact that Spock has a sister is a pretty big deal, adopted or not.
