I am not into taking things out of StarTrek for much more than what they are; Fiction. Though i like the 'ideals of StarTrek' and the idea of their Utopian society i know that it will never come to pass in RL. It's simply not going to work. But that's not the thing i'd like to talk about here. That's a whole different topic with lots of sub threads sticking out of the tapestry to pull on. I would like to just simply tell you folks something to totally contradict the statement i just made in the paragraph before this one. Big Grin

There is one episode that really touched me emotionally, sparked an insight into my own life and changed my life for the better if not downright saved it.

It's episode 25 from season 6 of Deep Space 9, "the sound of her voice".

Don't worry! there's no risk for spoilers here. For those who've seen it they'll know what i am talking about without risking spoilers for those who haven't (o.O shame on you! Go see it already! Tongue Out)

Now to fully appreciate the implications of it all for me you should understand that when i saw it a couple of years back i was in a bad place in my life.

I had lost friends and my father in a short time and by necessity been the one to take most of the responsibility of taking care of the arrangements that have to be taken care of when someone passes away. I did so without hesitation or even giving it a second thought really. Someone had to and in all of the three instances i probably seemed like the one least debilitated by grief or something but regardless of why/how i was the one making all the arrangements, doing the paperwork and having wet shoulders from the crying being done on them.

What i didn't realize was that i was rapidly isolating myself from my friends and family as well as allowing myself to ignore my own problems in life by telling myself that i didn't have any compared to the family and friends of the people that had passed away. My friends never knew what was really going on or thought to ask because the one on whom everyone depends for help and who's always helping others through their grief can't need help with anything himself now can he?

It was months later when i saw this episode and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was watching it with one of the two friends i had left at the time with which i actually spent time with. At the end with the words spoken by Julian, but especially those of Miles, i broke down and started crying. My friend's subsequent question "dude. wtf? Are you okay?" cracked the last bit of the wall and.... well, it wasn't pretty let me leave it at that. From then on he unwavering and relentlessly helped me tackle the problems in my life, unfailingly supported me in my grief when i went through my mourning process (which he made me realize i had yet to begin with) and was instrumental in the process of mending the broken pieces of my social life and relations with my friends.

Sure, i had done some damage that was beyond repair and in some instances that process is still very much an ongoing project but i think that i've turned things around and have an actual sapling of a tree of confidence that everything is going to be alright some day. And that's a incredible long way to have come when you're coming from the neighborhood of "All that's left to do is write a good farewell letter and then i can end it all and rid the world of yet another failure in life".

I hope that, if anything, if there's something to be taken away from all this it must be this:

Make sure your friends and loved ones know you care, and want them in your life.
And no one should have to mourn alone.

Thank you for sharing your touching personal story. When I want to be reminded exactly how Star Trek has helped me personally, and how it can give guidance at a basic philosophical level I re-watch this video:

It gives me tears every time. Things may seem bleak in the world at times, but we're getting there! And we will do it.
