EPISODE DISCUSSION: THE VULCAN HELLO

This thread is for pre and post episode discussion of the first episode, The Vulcan Hello. If you do not wish for spoilers, then you have missed all the warnings in the title and activity stream, shocking! So if you are reading this post, then you should turn away now.

The episode first airs on the 24th of September for American viewers and the 25th for international viewers.

7:56 CST: The show started about 15 minutes late, and just went to commercial after the cold open and opening. So far so good, the first scene has had a Star Trek feel at least, let's see how the rest goes

8:12 CST: The second commercial break. It's too dark to see what's going on properly. I'm not a fan of Burnham as a character, or her actress. Her spiel during the spacewalk was just poorly delivered, and the way she treats Serru is unprofessional.

8:23 CST: Burnham should just let her DNA unravel and let us have Georgeiu as the lead character. Also, how do the Klingons already have cloaking devices if the Romulans have them to them. The battlecruiser looks pretty cool though

8:36 CST: So it's sounding like these Kingons are some separate cult-tribe from the main Empire? Hopefully. That thing with the albino Klingon was abit on the nose. I like Serru even more after his scene....I guess that light is the 'Beacon'

8:49 CST: Mutiny on the Shenzhou! I'll admit, Burnham had a point, but she had to realize that a proper Starfleet captain wouldn't fire the first shot without a really good reason, and almost certainly not during first contact. The Klingon fleet arrived, and shocker, none of the ships even look Klingon!

I don't mind spoilers, and thank you Noram for adding a record of events there! I was watching this and the Reddit thread at the same time, with mixed response over there on it. Guess I'll have to wait till tomorrow to find out what it's really like and the 2nd episode follow it! I hope you atleast got a trial of all access to give us your running views of the next episode Noram

I haven't finished it (Because it was DVR'ed and the Oprah thing went on really late, like Noram mentioned.) but so far...I don't like it...I see a whole lot of things that were pretending to be Trek but didn't feel Trek, it literally feels like they're trying to reboot Star Trek with the vision of what they feel like Trek should be like.

And what they think Trek should be is generic cheap science fiction with lots of explosions, trying to be hip and cool, trying to be the new flavor of the month which is intensely gritty.

I have to say it is a lot better than expected, calling it Star Trek I am not sure I will have to watch more of it.

I just think it is very Dark and apparently this is what the Producers of the new Movies and the TV Show wants Star Trek to be, at least we have The Orville to show us a peaceful and bright future for humanity.

Just finished watching the first episode on Netflix! I did enjoy watching it, It’s a lot different than I was expecting. I’m going to keep and open mind and definitely stick with it the whole way through!

I noticed that in the title sequence they show the original communicator and phaser from The Original Series, does that mean that they will somehow find a way to properly integrate discovery into the normal trek timeline??

I very doubt that, several cast members have called it a Reboot and that is what it seems to be.

I just finished both episodes, and i'm still reeling from the experience. I have emotions warring for dominance inside. There were certainly things i will probably rant the heck out of in the coming days. Most of them will be about the Klingons, and the little things that make Discovery impossible to integrate into the main universe, foerver stamping it with the "alternate universe/timeline" label. I shall be voicing my disappointment and dislike for the opening theme. And i most certainly will have to vent some little issues with physics and common sense i noticed.

But despite that, and i know i shall be quartered, keelhauled and beheaded for this, i think it is fracking awesome!

Absolutely loved it, and i welcome Discovery into the family of Startrek with a warm and loving embrace! Can't wait for the next ep and hope the Captain and crew of the Discovery won't ruin it for me when we get to meet them.

I liked it, but it didn't feel like Trek to me. I hated what they've done with the Klingons, they looked more like Krall from the movie than Klingons (but Worf style Klingons are among my favourite Trek races).

I've just finished watching the first episode so on to the second; I'm reserving final judgement until I've seen a few more.

I finished watching it too, and all I can say it's ok. I will continue to watch it, but I feel some oft he acting is questionable and seems too forced. Story is definitively interesting, the theme doesn't agree with me neither just seems very "not Star Trek". But it is worth a watch, especially as this could mean the death of Star Trek - if not watched - it's just a shame that they have gone down a different path to the standard.

I went into last nights episode much the same way I did for the first JJ Trek movie, an open mind with no expectations. Wow, just wow. It blew my mind

I felt it had the perfect balance of Trek history, lore and respect but also setup an amazing direction for itself to follow.

The special fx were second to none, the acting was great and I loved the fact a good part of the show was spoken in Klingon.

Any doubts I had about the show are gone, now I have a new weekly show that I can look forward to.

Just watched this and the second episode on Netflix, I am stating now that I am not really a fan of the current Klingon design, it might grow on me but right now I don't like it.

As for the ship? It looks pretty fantastic.

I am confused about something, all the other shows have their ship name as the show name (Star Trek: Voyager etc) is this not going to happen with Discovery?
